Having temper tantrums and small man syndrome will usually cut it with 18-22 year olds who don't know any better.
Not so much with grown men. They'll just tell you to go frick yourself.
That dynamic was too much for Saban to handle, so he took his ball and went home.

John Wooden says Hi
During his tenure with the Bruins, Wooden became known as the "Wizard of Westwood,"
With UCLA he won 620 games in 27 seasons and 10 NCAA titles during his last 12 seasons, including seven in a row from 1967 to 1973
His UCLA teams also established a then-record winning streak of 88 games and four perfect 30–0 seasons
They also won 38 straight games in NCAA tournaments and 98 straight home wins at Pauley Pavilion.

I don't know, Bill Belichick seems to do that all the time. The Pats are always cutting and signing people.
In those situations, Bill signs a bunch of no-names/cast-offs, coaches them up in the system and keeps the machine running.
Saban just goes out and handpicks another Top 3 recruit at the position.
Horrible comparison here.

Bah phones.
I don’t think Payton is better X&Os than Saban. NO has a great QB, but too often Payton will abandon the run game and go full air raid, when his greatest success happens when he runs the damn ball.
Saban has at least tried to evolve from ground and pound to a more balanced attack even though it grates on him. He’d be much happier with 300 rushing and 200 passing, instead of the other way, and he evolved his defense in order to slow down the spread.

If you want to keep it to college Football Larry Kehres who Coached Mt. Union (div. III) probably takes the cake.
He has the most national titles; 11 (1993, 1996–1998, 2000–2002, 2005–2006, 2008, 2012). Was the national runner-up 6 times as well. Had 23 conference titles and 21 unbeaten regular seasons, the most of any coach in college football history. The guy finished his career 332–24–3.
I don't care what level you're coaching. That's amazing.

I love how failing miserably is a 2 year stretch where he went 15-17. Whatever makes LSU fans sleep at night I guess

Saban wasn’t that bad considering his teams.
Sean Payton was 17-15 after his first 2 years in the NFL and Saban was 15-17 after his 2 years in the NFL. Not that much of a difference, especially if you consider Payton had Drew Brees and Saban had Dante Culpepper

saban has already proven he is about .500 as an NFL coach of a great franchise (Miami).
This is a stupid debate.
Any NFL coach who has won a super bowl is a better coach than saban. I won't deny that saban is the best coach in college football history. That is not debatable. But college is like junior varsity compared to the NFL.
Let's just say that saban is the tallest man in china.

but failed miserably as a pro.
As a Mississippi State fan, I would have assumed you could easily recognize miserable failure and know that 2 games under .500 with one winning season in 2 years doesn’t qualify.
Should have known better than to assume.

Saban was a better NFL coach than Steve Spurrier.

Besides the fact that one made the NFC championship game and the other failed to make the playoffs both years? Not much of a difference.
The better comparison here would be Herm Edwards vs Saban (on the NFL side, that’s still generous since Herm made the playoffs his first two seasons). Let’s stop comparing Saban to upper echelon NFL coaches please. The ones trying to defend Saban will just look silly.

Very hard to compare CFB to the NFL -- they are very different beasts.
But I would go with Payton.
1) He made one of the NFL's worst performing franchises a winner.
2) He won a SB at one of the worst performing franchises.
3) He has sustained that success in a league that forces parity as much as possible.
4) He brought Brees to New Orleans when Miami balked.
