Maybe they were bored in a treestand.

Kinda like the origins of this nonsensical thread

I care not one whit about the NFL, NBA, MLB, etc., etc.. I'm also not going to defend Saban, or his record. But to suggest that he "failed miserably" is a bit of a stretch, don't you think? His two year record with Miami was 15-17. The two year record prior to Saban was 14-18, and the two year record after he left was 12-20. So we're not talking about a dynamo of a franchise.

But Vecchio, if all of this makes your little world seem brighter, then have at it.

Again, so wouldn't that make what Payton has done in New Orleans that much more impressive by taking the league's worst franchise to the top?

Before Payton, the Saints were garbage. In the 39 years before his arrival, the Saints made the playoffs 5 times (going 1-6 with 5 of those losses in wild card games), they won their division only twice ( ), and the year before he arrived, they went 3-13.

In the 12 years since Payton arrived, the Saints have made the playoffs 6 times going 8-5, won their division 5 times, made it to the conference championship twice (winning one), and won the Superbowl. Oh, and in year one, he acquired Brees when Saban passed on him and he took a 3-13 team from 2005 to 10-6 and the NFC Championship in year one.

I speak for myself. There is more parity in the NFL than there is in college football. The league is built for a level playing field whereas college football isn't.

Saban is the greatest recruiter in CFB. This doesn’t make him the greatest coach in all of football though.

In college, you can prop yourself up by bringing in top notch talent to mask any deficiencies you may have as an Xs and Os guy.

You can’t necessarily do this as an NFL head coach. You have to be an Xs and Os guy first and foremost. Ex: McVay, Payton, Belichick, Nagy, Reid. Then you tool your franchise around the culture you want to create.

Saban knew his strengths and weaknesses. Strength being a recruiter. Weakness being Xs and Os compared to the standard necessary in the NFL. Saban is the greatest college football CEO of all-time. But there’s a reason he knew he couldn’t hack it in the NFL.

you need to check the records before making an asinine statement like that. Saban in two years brought Miami from a perennial loser to a 500 team. Both the fans and the owners were very unhappy he left. He only left because the front office turned down Drew Brees, and he couldn't deal with the stupidity anymore

Nick Saban is probably the most dominant coach in any sport, maybe in history.

Sean Payton has won 1 SB
How dominant would Paytons teams be if he was allowed to play with a huge talent disparity over his opponents?

You cant compare nfl success to college success. Apples to basketball comparison really

It’s Sean Payton without a doubt. Saban is a great recruiter and uses that to have a talent adavatage. Hell I would even say Pete Carrol proved to be a better coach since he had success at the college and professional level. With even talent I would take Pete Carrol and Sean Payton over Saban.

Improved the team’s record from before he got there- deal with it. Look, I really don’t care how he did in the NFL. I just hate emotional people (around here it’s usually LSU fans) who just make shite up to fit their world view. It’s not hard to bash Saban without making shite up.

No one is bashing Saban in this thread. But you are being disingenuous if you characterize his stint at Miami as anything other than a failure. That's not a world view, it's a fact, one you've said you don't care about -- seems like you are the one wanting a view confirmed.

Saban is the GOAT in the college football world. Nothing anyone can say will take away from that. But when people choose not to ignore his stint in the NFL, it's not emotional, bashing him, or "making shite up" to fit a world view.

You should probably do a record check yourself bud.

Dolphins before Saban
1998: 10-6
1999: 9-7
2000: 11-5
2001: 11-5
2002: 9-7
2003: 10-6
2004: 4-12

Perennial loser does not equal one down season.

Edit: prior to that 2004 season, the last time the Dolphins had a losing season was in 1988. Wtf are you talking about man!?

So if we're going on records, Payton brought an actual franchise loser that went 3-13 in 2005 to 10-6 and to the NFC championship game in one year.

This is actually the closest head to head comparison we have between the two. And in this regard, Payton wins. Resoundingly, overwhelmingly, and unquestioningly. You're being dishonest if you claim otherwise.

I mean, where does this stop? Is Saban really better than the coach at Bishop Gorman?

That guy has won 8 straight championships. See how stupid this comparison is?

I think Saban is the best at his craft, and those NFL coaches could not do better in college than he has. But you cant compare him to coaches in a league in which the talent is spread across in a much more even fashion.

If you are a gm in the NFL and are looking to hire a coach. Will you hire nick saba or Sean payton? I'm pretty sure every one of them would hire Sean payton. He's been successful at the higest level in the sport for a long time. Saban quit as a pro. End of discussion.

Of course

For example

At Alabama, nick saban is 14-14 against teams that finished in the top 10

That shows Saban does not dominate teams equal to his in talent/success. That is not good for the NFL. But what Saban does better than anyone is his teams dont have down games against lesser opponents

For reference, Pete Carroll was 10-3 against teams that finished in the top 10 at USC

Saban's the best in college ball.

Payton's not the best in pro ball.

Pete and Urban are the best big game college coaches I have ever seen

But ill be damned they both suck at keeping their team motivated and focused for a full season like Saban does

Carroll was fired after his first year as a head coach in the NFL and was also fired from his second NFL head coaching job after 3 seasons. He didn't really make it until his 3rd stint as a head coach in the NFL. I doubt we'll ever get a chance to see it, but I would bet Saban would improve as a head coach in the NFL if he ever went back

Only us old folks remember Carroll with the Jets and Pats.

Or remember Belichick with the Browns
