Can't go wrong with Mandina's, R&O's, Frankie & Johnny's, Mahony's, Parkway Tavern or Domilise's for poboys/traditional New Orleans food.

Felix's for poboys and oysters. If you want to venture out to the hood for some legit food head out to Castnet. Finer dining there are a million options but Revolution's death by gumbo is one of my favorites.

Just because a place became well known and has long lines does not make it a tourist trap. A good way to tell if a place is a tourist trap is the amount of stuff they sell in their gift shop. Mother's is about as basic as it gets.

I get sick of the heavy Southern / Cajun food in NOLA after about 2 meals...
Go to Shaya on Magazine. It's upscale Mediterranean. Won a James Beard award several years back. Their homemade pita is so good.
Best value meal I'm aware of. Wife and I can split a half order of hummus and pita, an appetizer, and one large plate, each order 2 glasses of wine (good wine selection as well), and get out of there for $150-$170 total and still have food left over.
It's my favorite go to spot in NOLA.

I hate the Quarter. Go see it if you've never been and once you've knocked that off your list, don't go back.
I much prefer the Garden District / Uptown areas. Also Freret... lots of good local spots around that neighborhood.
Bearcat Cafe in Freret is my favorite breakfast spot in town. Unreal food and no tourists.

Uptown NO has good options like Superior Seafood and Joey K’s. Katie’s in Mid City is also good. Port of Call on Esplande is very overrated. Would not recommend. If day drinking, go to Lafitte’s. Be careful out there at night.

I agree with all the responses. NOLA is one of the best food cities in America and every thing is close. You can walk a few hundred feet and go from one top notch place to another.

Lot of good recommendations in here. I'll throw one in that is a bit more of a hidden gem (though place is plenty well known, just not brought up a lot).
Cane and Table. Fantastic tiki/rum bar with some really good food. Their Fish Rundown dish was dynamite last time I was there.
