Seriously, how overrated are these two coaches? Pearl just finished his third year and won't even sniff the NIT and has yet to have a winning record in a mediocre conference. The guy has talent also. He has many 4 and 5 stars on his team. His defense is among the worse in college and his offense is just terrible. It seems like Tennessee was a fluke.

State posters were saying next years bulldog squad will win 30 games Why don't ya'll go for a winning record first? The guy won with elite NBA talent at UCLA and when they left it went down hill for him and he got fired. I now see why UCLA fired his arse.

Lets look at Avery Johnson as a new coach, that is having success with less talent than both. His team may not have a good offense, but they make up for it on the defensive end. Mike White is in his second year and going to be a top 4 seed in the NCAA tourney. Bryce Drew in his first year will likely take Vandy to the NCAA tournament. Basketball doesn't take four years to rebuild.

Both have had success everywhere they've been. Auburn is a very very bad job but CBP is still stacking the roster with talent.

Mississippi State will be fine but Howland kind of had to start over in year 2. Last year's team had a lot of vets.

A true tRanter would respond with a "blah blah, LSU fan don't know about basketball, blah blah"

But I can't argue your point. It is what it is.
The real unfortunate part is that we don't have baseball to heal our wounds this year

I guess every year is next year with state and auburn.

Pearl already has more talent than most of the league, save 4 or 5 teams. He's a terrible coach.

Ben Howland teams always take off in the 3rd year, we have the 2nd youngest team in the NCAA and most of them are 4 star talent so reasonable state fans expected marginal improvement this year with a big jump next year.

Avery has done a solid job, but he inherited a little bit more than Pearl and Howland did. Grant didn't leave a lot of great players at Alabama but he had built a solid culture and left some serviceable veterans, so Avery wasn't having to rebuild from smoldering ashes.

Next year is Avery's big year. If we don't win 20+ and go the tournament it will be a disappointment.

I have been less than complimentary of the job he's done at Auburn. Fact remains he won big at his other 3 stops.

Big year next year year for both.

Next year is a big year for all 4 of the "big hires" IMHO.

Barnes, Pearl, Johnson and Howland need to be on the verge of the tournament or in the tournament next season or else they are going to start losing serious momentum.

If Tennessee doesn't make the tourney next year Barnes is in big trouble.

There will be no seniors on Tennessee's roster so he will likely get a 4th year either way but he is already entering year 3 with little to no momentum or excitement around the program after the disaster of a final month this year.

Yea, it felt like Tennessee had something but that collapse did him no favors, especially since he is the only one of the 4 without shiny recruiting classes to show off to the masses.

Honestly I'm very curious to watch all 4 next year. Auburn and State SHOULD take big leaps, and Alabama has a few guys playing out of position that could really flourish in their natural places when Sexton shows up and can set up the entire offense.

Howland and Pearl have two of the youngest teams in basketball and are asking a ton of minutes out of guys who aren't ready yet. Auburn is very talented and they still have a lot to work on next year if they went to be a NCAA tournament team. They will have the talent to do so but they have to become a better defensive team. State feels like they are two years away from having their team together. I haven't really been that impressed with State's freshmen. The only one I really love is Peters but they should be around .500 in conference play next year.

I guess I just don't see the comparison. You can't say Mike White inherited a bad situation. Are Drew or Johnson showing a big leap above Stallings and Grant at the moment?

Fulkerson, Pons, Johnson, Walker, Kent will be a nice freshman class for us imo. Gives us a lot more size. I think people will be excited about those first 3 especially. Fulkerson was better than Williams for us the first month of this year.

Definitely a nice supplement to the rising sophomore class of Bone, Turner, Bowden and Williams.

No excuse not to make the tourney imo.

State loses Ready next year and gains a 5* PG (N Spoon top 50 player), two 4* PF/C (Ado is a top 100 player) and another 3* big. Howland will have a good team next year that loses nobody the following year. This year will be the last year State doesn't make postseason play for awhile.

He inherited more talent, though. Pearl and Howland essentially have built their rosters from scratch; they might have more "talent," but they've had zero stability or veteran leadership. Avery inherited a senior leader in Retin, some decent role players likr Norris and Taylor, and a pretty solid freshmen class with Ingram and Hall.

Grant's Alabama was a way better program than Ray's Mississippi State or Barbee's Auburn. None of the three current coaches have elevated their programs past their predecessors. I'd say Avery looks poised to next year.

State fans said the same thing last year.
