2019 LSU was arguably the greatest college football team that had ever been assembled. LSU fans may not have had the same storied tradition or number of titles as Alabama to brag about but they had the "best team ever" claim. That claim was put into question one short year later by none other than the much hated Alabama. Covid restrictions or not, it was obvious that Alabama was elite that year. Whether they were better than 2019 LSU is up for debate and kind of irrelevant because we'll never really know. What matters is that an argument can be made. It was a kick in the nuts. That's the obvious reason why some people are hell bent on the asterisk.

Hard to get in a rhythm in only 6 games. Sure, bama was good and played a lot of games, but how many of those games were difficult? Teams were mailing it in, players were sitting out, there were no fans to create a tough on the road atmosphere. That bama team was great, and probably wouldve won the title in a normal season, but we will never know. Also, you mention hanging 50 on florida as some huge accomplishment, but they gave up 46. And this board doesn't hold dan mullen's florida career in high regards.

That a singular football team went through an entire season without missing any players due to covid whereas its national title game opponent missed around 20 players due to covid on the reg is very fishy as far as legitimacy is concerned
then we can just open the floodgates from there, Ohio State had 13 players missing due to covid for the natty game

So if Bama was cheating with its COVID testing, why allow Saban to test positive and miss a game? Why not fudge his results too?

A fully-stocked Bama team against teams missing players due to covid makes a negligible difference without Saban on the sidelines in a single game situation
The only way a team can defy astronomical odds like that vis a vis all the other teams in the entire sport can only be explained in one plausible way

Oh, and that one plausble way is that Bama was somehow cheating. Bama was the only team in the country that discovered the secret to faking COVID tests. That definitely seems plausible.

They were very talented and had the GOAT head coach. In any given season, a team with that profile generally only loses raucous away games with intimidating atmospheres. They didn't have one of those.
The SEC is tough because it is talented, sure, but it's also tough because road games are a bitch. Road games were nothing.

The absolute worst thing that could have happened to LSU fans in the wake of their 2019 national championship was 1) for their program to fall apart and 2) to see Alabama win the very next national championship.
And that is exactly what happened.
It left a permanent scar on many of them. Their coping mechanism has been to convince themselves and each other that 2020 didn’t count.

Which evens the playing field. No home field advantage for anyone, meaning the teams are able to line up and just play football. If you're a team that relies on crowd noise to give you a decisive competitive advantage, maybe you aren't a healthy college football program.

Captain, the 2020 Alabama team won the Natty fair and square and I agree with Bama fans that there is NO reason for an asterisk, but the fact that a lot of their opposing teams were missing many players, I find it difficult to assess how good they were. For all I know they might not have been as good as any of the preseason Top Four Teams that LSU beat in 2019. I just don't know how good that Alabama team was. Some Alabama fans think that Alabama team's season somehow "spoils" LSU's 2019 Championship team. That's impossible, but if they want to believe so, I have no problem with that. But I'm purty sure the overwhelming majority of college football talking heads (for what that's worth) and fans in the 49 states not named Alabama feel the 2019 LSU team was better than the 2020 Alabama team...by a wide margin. If you don't believe me, strike up a conversation with some of those people the next time you are out of state. Echo chambers are not very enlightening. Good luck to the Tide this year.
