Mike Gillespie

JUST IN: #Gamecock starting tight end Kiel Pollard is ending his football career after breaking his neck. Was expected to be a very big part of the offense this season. @abc_columbia

FWIW,

He said in his announcement, that could still physically play the game, but it wasn't safe to do so. He'll graduate in December.

Best of luck young man.

Damn hope for a full recovery for him. Might want to change the title a little so as to remove any sliver of a pun. Not saying you were trying to be funny, but you have a history.

Yeah, sounds like he'll make a full recovery and be fine. However, out of safety he won't play football anymore.

Glad to hear this... Sorry to see that it means the end to his football career, but as we all know there's a lot of much worse ways this could have gone. Hopefully he's able to find a path forward that brings him as much or more joy as football did.

Bad news but he made the right decision. Praying for his recovery and a happy future.

This is where having Marcus Lattimore on SC's staff pays off. I don't know what kind of NFL future Kiel had, but I would imagine it as marginal at best. But this is exactly the situation that Marcus get the young men in the program to focus on. You never know what the next page of the book will reveal.

Great to hear that.

There is more to life than football, although it is hard to convince young men in their prime of that sometimes.

Lord,

I come to You, asking for your healing hand on Kiel.
I believe in the power of faith and prayer.
I ask You to begin your mighty work in the body of Kiel.
Please reach down and surround him, his family, his health care providers, and his teammates with peace and strength.
Give them the faith to believe that all things are possible in You.

In your name I pray,
Amen.

I had the same compression fracture of the same vertebrae and went through all the stingers, numbness down the legs, through the crotch, pain across the shoulder .... he'll heal. But he was wise to give up the game now. He'll have plenty of neck pain issues the rest of his life in all likelihood.

Kid was a hard worker. Won all the right accolades for scholastic stuff, teammates voted peer review stuff for hard work, did everything asked of him.

He'll do great in life.

Damn I remember him, Bielema was infatuated with him during the recruiting process. Glad he's going to be okay outside of football.

Similar thing happened to us a few years ago with Rawleigh Williams. Neck injuries are scary.
