2008 - ranked 104
2007 - ranked 97
2006 - ranked 76
2005 - ranked 37

With the decline being so rapid, why or how does anyone think they will be so much better in one year? Yeah, I get they have Tulsa and Arky's offensive wizard, but really.. from 104 to what this year? How much improvement is realistic this year?

im not just saying this bc i am from Arkansas, or that Malzahn was our OC, but i can tell you this:

Malzahn will make Auburn potent on offense. This year my guess is they will finish top 50

More than double production? 107 to 50, for real?

Malzahn will make Auburn potent on offense when he gets a decent QB, a few WRs, and a scat back

For real, if not top 50, top 65

They may make it back to the 80s this year. Malzahn is good but he's no miracle worker and it would take him prolly 3 years to get that offense back inside the top 30. Of course, he will be gone by then.

That's what I'm thinking.. maybe the 70's. They will start out pretty decent, but without depth they're not gonna be able to sustain this year. And if they get any injuries, then they're in even worse trouble.

Why we will be improved on offense (in no particular order):

1. Offensive Assistants on the same page. Unlike 2008, the OC and assistants are all working together.

2. Improved OL. The offensive line will be bigger and stronger. There's a core group of four juniors and a senior... and Grimes (OL coach) has a strong "spread" background.

3. Improved WRs. Trooper Taylor is putting together a solid unit while infusing the freshman with the returning upper classmen.

4. Gus Malzahn. Our play-calling will improve, the in-game adjustments will improve, and his system better fits our current personnel.

5. Chris Todd's health. His arm-strength should be better than last year. He has the experience in spread offenses.

I don't think top 60 is out of the question, and to be honest..... at this point, the defense worries me more than the offense.

if their D keeps it close, they can win. Auburn may be a trap game for sure this year. Statistics can be very misleading and stats over an entire season can be very misleading when applying them to one game.

Auburn's main problem has been offensive production. Knox couldn't coach a receiver to hit water if he fell out of a boat. After our deep pass threat left due in part to Cox's weaker arm and receiver talent not being coached up or able to simply perform dispite the idiot coach teams put their safeties in the box. This started cutting into the running game.

If you look at 2004 compared to 2003 there was minimal difference in our running game between the two years. The big difference was the passing game JC's passer rating went from 100 against BCS teams to 189 against them in 2004. Also the fact the average pass from AU that season went 15 yards, teams could no longer put 2 extra in the box opening up the running game. This explains the better running game in 2005 where teams respected the pass from us more.

This is the thing that Gus must do, he has stated he wants to go deep 8 times per game. If teams cough up TDs on those you can bet teams will keep a safety deep to help cover that pass if Benton and Carr can break loose and get a TD on those.

I've got some people close to the program saying 50 is what we are expecting assuming we go relatively injury free on offense. I'm going more conservative with 60 or so. That said with a top 30 defense and that for the offense that is an 8 win season statistically when you look at the past for BCS teams.

AU can't be much worse then last year. Malzahn is probably the biggest hire Chizik could have made. But I think AU offense is still a few years off. Malzhan likes to pass, a lot. I'm not sure if Auburn has the QB yet for that system. If he stays around and if Chizik does not interefere too much, I think Auburn will have a very good offense in the coming seasons.

Gus passes about the same amount he runs, but yes that is still a lot more passes than we normally do thanks to tubershell. I've never seen a coach that once he gets 2 scores up try to sit on a lead like Tubs would.

AU's offense will be between 50-60 in the country this year. It is more likely they will be under 50 than over 60 IMO. Yes it is possible for us to improve that much. We do have some talent and good coaching. And being ranked around 50-60 is pretty average and that is where I see our offense this year.

Common Misconception

Tulsa 2008:
Rush YPG = 268
Pass YPG = 301

That was one of the things I worried about at first when Malzahn was hired. After reading some stats, he is a run heavy spread guy. His philosophy is to use the run to set up the pass, as opposed to Tony Franklin who did the opposite.

I don't think we will be in the top 50 this year, but we will be damn sure better than the last 2 years.

It was posted, with a link, a while back that after 3 seasons, 3 conference championship games, and 3 bowls, Gus's offense has thrown the ball a grand total of one (1) less time than he has run it.

Gus is about tempo. He wants the ball snapped within 5 seconds of the spot. He wants wideouts chasing down incomplete passes and running the ball to the ref. Every player has a role to play in speeding up the offense.

This is mutally exclusive from ties to any particular formation. You can run the wishbone if you want.

That's 7 teams ranked in 100th or below they played against with an "awesome" offense. The average ranking of the defenses they played against was ranked 92nd in the nation. Forgive me if I'm not shaking in my boots over Malzahn and what he's taking over at Auburn, with an Offense that is averaging around 100 the last 2 years.

You realize Bama's offense last season was ranked 66th right?
