re: Auburn's 1958 "national championship" is from counting up votes from every week's AP Poll.

We could claim 7 titles if we did em like everyone else. Tbh we're one of the more conservative in that regard.

If Alabama claimed NC's like everyone else, they could easily lay claim to 31 NC's.

Add 2015, '17, & '20 to to these:

I see no reason why Alabama doesn't just do like everyone else and claim all their NC's that they are entitled to.

Glad Auburn is on your mind.
LSU fans got their panties in a wad over this week's opponents claim of ancient championships. Meanwhile, their astronomically paid coach, who has been in the public eye for 20+ years, and biggest accomplishment is a CUSA trophy is sitting on two losses with a massive NIL-payrolled team.

Methinks Golesh ruslted A LOT OF JIMMIES when he knocked off the #1 team on their field with a ton of USF transfers.

Elijah Melendez is about to make Leavitt really earn his paycheck, and they know it.

Not by me. That was reason we added them. And it wasn't done until after Bear because Bear didn't like to claim anything before the AP era. Some might say because he didn't want share glory, and I don't know. But he was still really fond of the 1934 team he was on.

So after Bear passed, they started claiming them the way ND did.

I never knew that about Bryant; could you link me to some information about that?

On a slightly other topic, whether or not there were no national champions before the poll era, humans were still celebrating national champions and actually calling teams back then national champions.

It seems sort of self-righteous/condescending for people born lately to arbitrarily decide that what people felt back then and said back then and labeled things back then to be inconsequential and meaningless.

I really can't believe an Alabama fan has the gall to chime in on this thread.

Not really sorry, just things I picked up from reading in the past.

I think in the 20s the winner of the rose bowl was just called that in the newspapers is where you get that headline, rather than some national official ranking system that would later be used.

And what you are talking about in the last paragraph is presentism and I agree. When I do the bogus title rankings I do my best to keep things in line with how the sport and culture operated at the time. So if bowl games didn't count, I don't count them either. I'm not trying to "fix" anything. I do not at all like when people go back and pretend like bowl games mattered. Those teams were crowned basically a month before the exhibition game was even played.

I think Alabama got screwed in 1966, but it's not my place to change history.

I keep rules based on the era. Pre-1936 is math poll era and rose bowl eras. I also generally accept undefeated seasons because people did that too. 1936-1997 is poll era, Coaches or AP only. Then after that you have the BCS and playoff eras etc.

I'm not at all surprised an Auburn fan has no clue on the standards an other things related to legitimate national championships. It's why nearly 80% of your national title claims are bullshite.

Alabama has 1 bad claim, 1941. 17 legit.
Auburn has like 7 bad claims and 2 legit.

"But Alabama" my arse. Alabama could claim 40 national championships the way Auburn claims them. You weren't even awarded them by anyone, you just say I'm claiming it. Literally nobody else even agrees with you.

Auburn was banned from post-season play in 1957 for paying prospective recruits, and they didn't play a post-season game in 1958 either. In 1958 LSU not only went undefeated, they also played in a bowl game and won.

Always weird when the "it doesn't count if you lost your bowl game" crowd gets REALLY quiet when saying the same thing about teams that either refused to play in bowl games or were straight up banned from playing in them.

Before 1968, bowl games had no bearing on the national championship. That was the year the AP moved their final poll of the season, which was the de facto national championship though there were numerous others, until after the bowl games.

Prior to then, bowl games were essentially seen as exhibition games.

Yeah, you lose your bowl game, you're not national champion. Ya'll try to claim several when yall lost your bowl game. I know that was ancient times, but it is also ridiculous. At least all the ones we claim, we won our post season bowl.

Notre Dame won contemporary TROPHIES in 1924, 1929, 1930 so they weren't just "claiming" them and it definitely wasn't retroactive.

Alabama didn't have any contemporary trophies, to my knowledge.

The poll used for I'm assume the trophy for winning the math poll wasn't created until 1926. And it didn't have anything associated with it.

Knute Rockne saw the math poll and had them run it back to 1924 so Notre Dame could retro claim it and get the trophy.

And then they retired the trophy after Notre Dame won it in 29 and 30, so they now keep the thing forever.

Oh, and that trophy was added at the same time and paid for by a big time supporter of Rockne. Coincidentally I'm sure.

Everyone "cheated". Brandon Spikes just admitted he took a pay cut when he went to the NFL.

You just said a team that doesn't win a bowl can't be national champion. It's YOUR logic.

You just don't understand the timeline to see how stupid you are.

Bowl games were exhibition games. They didn't just wait around until after they were played and say - well it doesn't matter, you are the national champions.

Those national championships were awarded at the end of the season. Around December the 1st on average. Bowl games happened on Jan 1, a month AFTER they were awarded a national championship by the selectors.

So they went into those games having already achieved the goal in a game they were told didn't really count and was mostly a matter of pride.

And your dumb arse wants to come along 60+ years later and pretend like those games suddenly matter and count? That's fricking retarded.

I wasn't alive then, so I really don't give 2 fricking sh*ts. I guess you were. You seem pretty passionate about it. And I really don't give enough sh*ts to continue arguing about it.

And if they had the ones from 2 coaches (one had the ncaa rule book made to stop his dirty ways and the other ran from the NIL before others bought up his paid for players) removed, they wouldn't exist as a program.

I wouldn't be claiming one if I had lost my bowl game.
And their argument is some reporters/journalists said they were national champions, so they claim it.
