re: Auburn's 1958 "national championship" is from counting up votes from every week's AP Poll.

Being proud of ignorance is no way to live your life.
Take the lesson and learn from it.

ND won the Bonniwell Trophy in 1924, perhaps the very first national championship trophy.
The Dickinson System was run in 1924 and 1925, not retroactively. ND topped the first ranking.
You are right that the Rissman TROPHY for those 2 years was awarded retroactively though.

Yeah, a university's football program claiming, 4, 6 ,8, 10, 12 ,14 national championships is so important and has such an impact on my life. GTFOH.

You are the one who chooses to participate in the discussion.
Now you're trying to convince everyone you aren't interested after getting schooled.
If you didn't care...you wouldn't post.

Iowa has the Grantland Rice Award.
Grantland Rice has hated LSU since we won it all in 1908; hated us even before ESPN.

Then along comes another poster, 3down10, that destroys the arrogance and smug presentation of Prattville Tiger.
Not surprising, at this point, PrattvilleTiger doesn't want to play anymore and wants his ball back that is now flat and of no use to anyone.

It is from someone pulling it out of the air with no legitimate basis whatsoever.

Nope, they didn't do it. That dog don't hunt.

I think in the 20s the winner of the rose bowl was just called that in the newspapers is where you get that headline, rather than some national official ranking system that would later be used.
Yes. But, in addition to being called that in publications and papers, there was also a general acknowledgement among college football fans about who were actually "national champions" during any particular season back then.
As you know, the concept of a national champion was alive and well and functioning as far back as 1901.
In 1901, Caspar Whitney, Charles Patterson, and The Sun had the first "polls". The overall concept of polls and national championships came well before mathematical rankings.

Notre Dame won contemporary TROPHIES in 1924, 1929, 1930 so they weren't just "claiming" them and it definitely wasn't retroactive.
Alabama didn't have any contemporary trophies, to my knowledge.
I didn't read the whole thread. Are you talking about physical trophies that can be tangibly held and felt? Or when you say contemporary "trophies" do you mean contemporary polls awarding championships?
If the latter is the case, Alabama was awarded contemporary NC rankings in '25 by both Boand and Poling and by Poling in '26, Parke Davis in '30 before his death in '32, and both Dunkel and Williamson in '34.

And if they had the ones from 2 coaches (one had the ncaa rule book made to stop his dirty ways and the other ran from the NIL before others bought up his paid for players) removed, they wouldn't exist as a program.
This is so true and you are a visionary of sorts for being able to see this clearly. I too have always maintained that if all football teams never had their very best coaches that they would amount to nothing.
You would have to remove Wade and Thomas from Alabama's coaching ranks too because Alabama was already one of the best teams around for decades and decades just because of these two coaches. Oh yeah, erase Stallings too.
Imagine Ohio State without Hayes, Tressell, Day, and Meyer. They are just nobodies with silver helmets and stupid little stickers.
Take away Schembechler, Yost, Carr, Crisler, and Harbaugh from Michigan and they are just a bunch of losers in a state that is much too cold for humans.
Let's remove Wilkinson, Switzer, Stoops, and Owen from Oklahoma's coaching list and they are really are just dirty land thieves living in a dust bowl and wouldn't even be in the conversation about anything football related.

Here's a clipping of Dartmouth topping the Dickinson System ranking in January 1926 (for the 1925 season). LINK
The ratings were not retroactively computed.
The TROPHY for the first two years was retroactively awarded.
Don't feel too bad about not knowing this... Dan Jenkins got it wrong too.

Yes trophies as in a tangible metal thing that you can hold, show to your fans, with a plaque that says "national champions" on it.
ND has a contemporary trophies (plural) for 1924, 1929, and 1930.
NONE of the math polls for Alabama in 1925, 1926, or 1930 were contemporary (to the best of my knowledge). All the selectors in the NCAA book are retroactive.
No trophies, either.
I don't doubt there was some amount of "wins the national title!" headline talk in newspapers, but the math systems were retroactive (as best as is currently known).

You're just wrong, highlighted by the fact you showed a team other than Notre Dame winning it and in a year after the one Notre Dame claimed retroactively.
I'm guessing you must be a shitty Notre Dame fan who didn't have the balls to claim a favorite team before posting so you could appear to be unbiased.

Huh? Dartmouth won the 1925 ranking, which is the link I showed.
ND won in 1924.

And my favorite team is Yale because they have the most national championships.

You said the original two rankings, 1924 and 1925, were retroactive.
Dartmouth 1925 clearly wasn't.
I know which publication ND 1924 was printed in, in early 1925, not retroactive. But I don't have a scan yet.

I do my own math rankings btw. And all I am seeing is someone who is working on their formula. Not the national selector/poll you are claiming it to be.
