That is factually incorrect. Auburn won the national championship in 1957 and continued their winning streak into 1958, going undefeated in back to back years.
Reining national champs, then went undefeated? Sounds like back to back national championshps
Alabama did the same thing for 3 years in a row. Won 2 NC's in a row and then went undefeated in '66.
The voters decided in 1966 that they didn't approve of white people playing football though and would not give Alabama their deserved 3-Peat because Alabama had some white players on the team.

Bama and UGA fans have no room to talk though when it comes to retro claiming.
We could claim 7 titles if we did em like everyone else. Tbh we're one of the more conservative in that regard.

It's embarrassing. It is a fake poll.

The "Montgomery Full Season Championship" that Auburn uses has Alabama as 5x champions for 1961, 1962, 1964, 1979, 1980.

Alabama follows a standard set by Notre Dame and USC. 1941 is a bullshite claim but was done as a frick you to Notre Dame.
What Auburn and Tennessee have done is no where near that. They just claimed shite Alabama would never claim.

Okay, I was just pointing out the fact that y'all also retroactively claimed a title.

pretty sure i was ridiculed for saying that Alabama wanted to catch notre dame.
i even cite the article where some guy in the 1980s admitted, "we just wanted to look better."

It has LSU as champ for 1959. Maybe ol David slid everything down a line when this foolishness was invented by whomever.

Need someone to go add up the votes/placement from all the weekly AP Polls of the season. Check his math.

Not by me. That was reason we added them. And it wasn't done until after Bear because Bear didn't like to claim anything before the AP era. Some might say because he didn't want share glory, and I don't know. But he was still really fond of the 1934 team he was on.
So after Bear passed, they started claiming them the way ND did.
I'd rather not claim 1941 even though it has a math selector.

I suppose it's kinda interesting to see who had the overall season-best AP Poll ranking.
But it's NOT a national championship.

I think they started claiming them around that time because Dan Jenkins wrote a piece in 1967 for Sports Illustrated that counted "all" the national championships.
No one had really done the research before.
So schools started counting them in the years soon after they had that article in their hand.
The Alabama claims are identical to the ones in the 1967 piece. But years like 1966 are NOT in the 1967 Dan Jenkins SI piece, so they're not claimed (still).

Notre Dame started claiming them back before the AP poll. It's pretty much what got the whole National Championships thing going.
You need a selector to award you a national championship, you don't just claim them(except for Auburn and Tennessee). There wasn't a valid selector for 1966 that awarded Alabama the national title, so Alabama doesn't claim it. Probably the same reason it's not in the article.
I keep a thread on the topic. It's needs to be updated for all the bogus Auburn claims, they will drop like a rock in the next rankings.
Which SEC teams claim the most bogus national championships - now with Texas and Oklahoma

Notre Dame won contemporary TROPHIES in 1924, 1929, 1930 so they weren't just "claiming" them and it definitely wasn't retroactive.
Alabama didn't have any contemporary trophies, to my knowledge.
You're right about the selectors, but the subset that Dan Jenkins put in his article isn't necessarily the best set. No real reason Houlgate 1941 is better than Sagarin 1966, for example. Neither are more or less "valid" than the other.
