Not to mention the Olympic athletes. Hell Abby Wambach is probably pretty well known I would assume given her soccer success.

it’s unlikely anyone in Seoul would know who Namath, Herschel, and/or Manning are either. American football isn’t exactly their thing.
I bet there are US soldiers in Seoul who would know/ or have heard of all of them.

I think that’s a safe bet.
I don’t believe they’re the audience the OP was referencing tho.

Nobody from anywhere in the world knows who effin Namath, Bo, or Hershel is.
Leaving the country should be a requirement for posts like this.

They would have to be old enough but there was time that Namath was considered the most popular athlete in the world(early 70's). Bo was a multi sport athlete which garnered a lot of attention, and baseball is an international sport very popular in Asia, and watching Bo play baseball was awesome. But basketball is second only to soccer in world popularity and I bet Shaq would be the best known athlete on that list around the world because of it.
edit: After further consideration Mahammed Ali was more popular than Namath around the world I would wager. So I will correct myself here.

I agree that John Daly is the most likely to be known world wide.

I’m not trying to rain on your parade but this is another example of what’s wrong in the selective thread.
Joe Namath only completed 50% of his passes and threw a shite load more INT’s that TD’s. The only reason he is known is for his cocky prediction that the Jets would win the Super Bowl. Don’t get me wrong, I too admire confidence.
But he was an average QB

I actually agree. But we aren't talking about over rated players, or the best players. We are talking about global popularity. In a more consevative time for athletes, Joe talked shite and guaranteed a win back when nobody did that(edit except Ali) and he became the most popular athlete of his time for it.(well second to Ali, now that I think about it) He appeared on tv shows, movies, commercials, and to deny his popularity in the early 70's is to deny reality.

Broadway Joe was super popular back in the day.

American football is not very popular outside this country, so no football players would be known. The only way to be world famous is to play soccer and to a lesser extent basketball.

Umm no the 70s was fricking Pele nobody knew who Namath was, or is. You’ve never left the continent have you?

Actually, I lived in Japan and Italy when I was in high school. However, because of my age, I am not able to remember the early 70's very well. So I will concede that Pele was probably the most popular athlete in the world during this time period, but Ali transceded sports and Pele not so much. However, I will not concede that Joe Namath is not known around the world among baby boomers because it just isn't true. American football is still a top 10 sport in the world and the Super Bowl, of which Namath won, is watched all around the world. Since I can only speak for Italy and Japan, I will say that American pop culture was big in both places in 1990-92, and was what the locals desired to discuss with me the most. Music, movies, and yes sports.
