No SEC champ is regular season winner. SEC tourney winner is a separate thing. Both are good though

Last place teams contemplate this stuff.

Odd timing - considering their path to the sweet 16 is very manageable

Frankly neither one means a lot to me. Post season NCAAT is what matters IMO.
Good luck to your Tigers today

What time does LSU play today?

The SEC champs are the regular season champs. It's always been that way. The tourney is just a tune up for the real tourney. Winning it is nice, but it's not the way the conference champion is determined.

Why not just use the same metric as baseball.
Conference champ and Tourney Champ?
I don't watch basketball so perhaps there's a reason they don't do this but should. Makes the conference wins more important.

LSU doesn't have to worry about either situation

The automatic bid for the NCAA Tournament goes to the various tournament winners, not the regular season winners. That's why there was speculation that Miami of Ohio would be left out, even though they went 30-0 in the regular season against a pathetic schedule.
The exception is if a conference doesn't have a tournament. As an LSU fan, this would suit me fine as the SEC Tournament has been a horror show for the Tigahs.
GEAUX TIGERS!

Then why have a conference CHAMPION tournament?

Agreed with this. Now both are slightly diminished due to the crazy amount of teams now and major schedule differences. But both still good accomplishments.

That's what it is. UF got the SEC Championship this year. Arkansas got the SEC Tournament trophy. Two separate titles for two different accomplishments.
