Programs could have chosen to keep charging $1 a ticket and put the game on the local PBS for free.

I just had a vision of this with William F Buckley, George Plimpton, and George Will in the broadcast booth.

"LSU's championship in 2019 was likely the last fully legitimate NC."

Yeah, when you think of pristine programs full of real student athletes playing only for the love of the sport, LSU's 2019 team is the first mental image most people get. I'm sure those kids were all struggling students who never got anything extra.

Yes. We're there. LSU's championship in 2019 was likely the last fully legitimate NC. Bama's in 2020 was somewhat legit but I would consider it "incomplete". Georgia was truly the best team in 2021 but NIL had already gotten started. Still, Georgia did not participate quite so much in it like the other big programs.

We’re only half way through the year, but so far you get the nod for stupidest post.

I would say we are more at the end of the beginning.

So much myopia; y’all realize that the vast, vast majority of college athletes will be unaffected by the recent shenanigans. There are more than 1,100 college athletics participating universities in the NCAA and NAIA.

Amateurism dead? Hardly. Just the ones where they really weren’t amateurs before.

What does actual amateurism have to do with big time college sports?

Real amateurism does not involve recruiting, athletic scholarships, special admissions, or the enrichment of coaches and administrators.

Who’s says we’re at the beginning of the end? Probably already at the end

Amateur athletics ended with the SCOTUS. We need to promise pay for play like some of the schools are doing or our recruiting will suffer badly.

The new transfer rule hurt CFB more than NIL. That HAS to be reverted back to the old rule.

Like a lot have said, the "amateurism" for revenue sports has been gone a long time. I think the real death knell of college football started when conferences began negotiating their own tv deals. Granted, it would usher in the greatness which was the 90's and 00' but i think we are paying the cost now. Programs got even more money and became untouchable so the NCAA went after the student athlete instead of trying to reign in their own member institutions. So, youve got the NCAA using all of their resources for a cause that they eventually would lose (NIL) while the institutions went buck wild and the NCAA did absolutely nothing. In turn, everything that was great about college ball is going away quickly; the rivalries, the guys going out there and playing their hardest to get to the next level and make that money, the thrill of being in a stadium with your friends watching your team (who you probably know a few guys) upset the big dog etc and etc. It sucks. I'll still root for my university no matter what but the days of me spending all day Saturday with a game on the tv is about over.

tl;dr its the NCAA's fault as always

at the Div 2 and 3 levels of football, no...

for the non-revenue sports at all levels, maybe some NIL, but won't change too much...
