I have actually seen where many prognosticators and voters have said that they ranked LSU that low due to the difficulty of its schedule. Just another reason why the preseason polls are meaningless.

Number of FINAL Ranked AP Teams by Division:
1992-2001:
East: 27
West: 25
2002-2007:
East: 14
West: 14
2008-2017:
East: 20

Again, this goes to show that the myth that the division balance is cyclical is not based on facts. The East may have been the slightly better division in first 8-10 years of division play, but its superiority was marginal at best. It was never vastly superior.
What's happened the past decade has been absolutely out of whack.
Since 2008, the SEC has averaged just 2 ranked teams per season while the West has averaged 3.4 ranked teams per season..... not only that, but the few teams from the East who have finished ranked are typically way down in the polls, often between #21 and #25.
TOP 20 TEAMS PRODUCED, 2008-2017:
East: 14
West: 32
The West has produced more than double the number of Top 20 teams during the past decade.
The trend appears as if it will continue in 2018 and likely as long as there is no change to improving the balance.
