Damn, that’s the last straw, Baylor is suing?
Surely we can kick LSU out of the SEC now!

How many is that now, three at LSU?

That's it. I'm no longer an LSU fan.
These lawsuits that don't affect me whatsoever regarding contracts I didn't sign are just too much to deal with.

Whatever happened, I'm sure LSU has no culpability in the matter. They're being persecuted for no good reason!

Baylor alleges in a lawsuit filed Friday in 170th State District Court that Sean Thompkins, an offensive lineman from Covington, Ga., owes the university $85,000,
Never heard of him
quote:
Thompkins signed a Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) agreement with Baylor in December 2025. The lawsuit alleges Baylor agreed to pay him for his NIL rights until June 30, 2027, unless the agreement was terminated before that by either party.
The lawsuit alleges the NIL agreement was terminated automatically on Jan. 1, 2026, when Thompkins entered the NCAA transfer portal and ultimately transferred to LSU. The university alleges he breached the NIL agreement without paying the required “buyout” amount outlined in the contract.
I'm curious to see if schools can actually enforce these contracts, if no consideration was given to the player.

why would you pay a player for more than one year? if lane kiffin decides to join a cult in the desert and not show up to his job.... they don't pay him. they didnt give him a huge frick off lump sum and will then have to sue him to recouperate

assuming they only paid him for the one year.... isn't this a bad look for baylor? won't this deter other players from wanting to go there?

This was what I said would happen, once LSU promised these guys roster spots they couldn’t not put them on the team . These guys left from wherever and then were left with nothing.

what's that got to do with anything

Can you explain what you think is happening here?

I don’t see how unless the players unionize and become deemed as “employees” of the university. It’s all very sticky and way too much nuance for myself to fully understand

Schools have been placing buyout clauses in the player contracts just the same as coaches contracts. Certainly the players are paid in some timely manner, probably monthly similar to coaches. The purpose of the buyout clause is to encourage both the school and the player to honor their contract, in this case until summer of 2027.
What is the difference between a contracted coach leaving for another job and a player doing the same? Why wouldn't buyout clauses be appropriate and honored?
