ND fans can analyze 10 ways to Sunday and it doesn't change the fact they have faced absolutely no one like Bama yet this year. On the flip side, Bama has played at least 3 teams that are all heads and shoulders better than anyone ND played.

Notre Dames opponents averaged 158 yds per game. Notre dame held them to 92 yds. Thats a difference of -66. Alabama's opp averaged 163 yds per game. Bama gave 80 per game. A difference of -83 under their average. So no, Notre Dame did not do a better job of holding their opponents under their average.

No, it didn't. Graham had a 55-yard run on a play early in the game on a breakdown and missed tackle. Besides that, Pitt ran 32 times for 89 yards, or 2.8 yards a carry.

During overtime they pushed them around.

Texas would have beat you if McCoy doesn't get hurt. Not a good example.

I know this is a six page thread, so somebody's probably brought up stats already, but McCoy played two good defenses that year (Oklahoma and Nebraska) and he was absolutely God awful against both. He had an 84qb rating against OU and an 81qb rating against Nebraska. And that's college qb rating, not NFL. For reference, the very worst QB in the NCAA this year was Kansas' Dayne Christ and he had a QB rating of 97. Kyle Frazier (2TDs, 8ints on the year) had a college QB rating of 99.

So in other words, against good defenses, Colt sucked harder than Linda Lovelace. We're talking 2-3 picks, <5yards/attempt, 40% completion, etc.

So yea. It was not a foregone conclusion that McCoy would have played much better against Alabama. In fact, all the evidence said he would have played just as badly.

LSU had a great rush defense last year and Saban came out and threw the ball in the BCS Title Game.

Misleading to count all the sack yardage from the QB. Even excluding his 55 yard carry, Pitt's RB had 117 yards on his other 23 carries (5.1 ypc).

I love it when people use the "take away that big play and the defense did good" argument.

Bama's offense faced the best rushing defense every day in practice this year. ND will be a walk in the park.

If ND can contain bama's run game bama is gonna get throttled.

That said id be shocked if ND held Bama to under 250 rushing yards and about 3 rushing touchdowns.

Anyone who needs a refresher on how good Notre Dame's run defense is needs to go back and re-watch their goal line stand against USC at home. The Trojans ran the ball 3 straight times from the 1 yard line and ND stopped them in their tracks. Their D-line and LBs look stout. They can get a strong push up the middle. Theyve got some big boys and they can line up and play physical. If they have a weakness on defense its their DBs.

Even that won't allow ND to win. Bama's passing offense is still far superior to ND's. ND's defense is not going to save them, even if they play lights out (which is highly doubtful) because ND's offense is not going to be able to score more than about 13 at most.

Notre Dame's starting DL and LB are bigger than I originally thought:

DE Moore 6-4 306lbs SR
DE Tuitt 6-6 303lbs SO
NT Nix 6-3 326lbs JR
LB Spond 6-2 248lbs JR
LB Shembo 6-2 250lbs JR
LB Te'o 6-2 255lbs SR
LB Fox 6-3 240lbs SR

Front 7 have a good amount of size and experience...imo. Built for stopping the run. DBs are a big smaller and less experienced except their safety Motta.

A point missed by all the Texas apologists is Mc Elroy was playing with broken ribs and could hardly throw the ball.

That negated a BIG part of our offense,Julio Jones.

You can have your healthy QB if you give us ours, and we beat the hell out of you again.

The Irish are clueless about what is coming at them.

Goal line stands....stand up in front of that 320 pound freight train of a goal line fullback Teo...and see what happens to your arse

How Bama lost 3 games that year, ill never know. That Bama team was a top 5 talented team, EVER. Two first rd rbs, beast first rd wr, first rd de , the entire 2011 Bama def, senior qb whom had already won a NC.

I blame it on McElroy. How he could not throw a deep ball to Julio when other teams consistently stacked the box I'll never know. South Carolina had safeties lined up next to linebackers all day and we can't hit a play action??

Yeah, I do not think that is a good example. Texas had to play practically the entire game with a qb who had never played before. The UT offense was 3 and out over and over and over for a long time with their D on the field and bama constantly running to protect the lead. Bama ran 51 times for 205 yards and 49 of those came on one run from Trent. Take out that one run and you are looking at 50 attempts for 150 yards. Texas shut down bama's run pretty well.

Didn't argue when I saw this the other day, but I am watching the replay on TLN right now and Ingram/Richardson are absolutely gashing Texas.
