It opened in 92. There weren't traditional titty bars downtown before that, downtown, but plenty of action on the periphery. Research the legend known as Effie's where you got a lot more than a lap dance.

Pretty dumb and arrogant comment at the same time.

I’ve been saying for years that Athens Georgia is a filth town. Kirby is trash

More young people die in car wrecks than of Covid.

Drugs and alcohol don’t help.

Reminds me of Lutzenkirchen wreck.

It is just sad that so many young people lose their lives to alcohol, drugs, etc.

This is unfortunately way too common.

The big scoop for me was that there is a strip joint in Athens.

There used to be another one and a lingerie modeling studio, whatever that was about. Toppers has been in the same place a LONG time. Its almost a Clarke County institution LOL.

Its a STRANGE place. I haven't been in there in years but in the late 90's there was an elevator from the floor above, which opened to the public on the street level lobby of the building, and the elevator door would open in direct line of site of the runway LOL. Many's the young family who got on that elavator heading in the wrong direction and wound up staring at a totally nude woman hanging onto a pole with a bunch of drunks staring lewdly at her....too funny.

It was, at one time, owned by an older black lady although it was rumored that she was a front for a loosely connected crime syndicate from Atlanta. I did about $25K worth of electrical work for them once during a renovation and they wouldn't pay their bills at all, let alone on time. I went to talk to the lady that owned it and when I entered her office there were two white dudes standing at attention on either side of her sitting at her desk dressed in sharkskin suits and wearing sunglasses LOL. They were straight of central casting for a low budget gangster movie. I did not receive any satisfaction from this meeting but after pulling a 1950's era bus plug out of the facility and shutting the power off the owner suddenly found my money and paid me. Strange that the money was readily available when there was no power in the place. Athens at the height of the popularity of the Sopranos was awash in similar business owners thinking they were some kind of Mafia Dons...Little Italy and Flanagan's Pub come to mind immediately. As it turned out the son of the Little Italy owner was indeed selling heroine out of the pizza joint so they may have actually had some ties to OC but the rest were just posing. It was funny to see....all of them were notorious about not paying their bills though and that wasn't funny in the least.

I have heard of people's family who has sued an establishment as they allowed patrons to leave while intoxicated and thus killed people with their cars in an accident. Either way there will be a lot of people digging deep to decide how to proceed if litigation is involved.

I doubt if there was ever a higher profile case of someone dying in an accident in Athens and there is a good chance that the driver was indeed intoxicated...no one knows but few would be surprised. That being said they won't have been the first people to leave Toppers in that state who got in an accident and probably not the first that involved a death....Toppers has been open a long time and is, at times, awash with serioulsy drunk college kids and locals alike....heaps of them. Maybe the largest population of seriously drunk folks in Athens on average and that is saying something. Lots of folks get seriously TORE up at Toppers. Toppers has survived many years, there business model is completely out of keeping with community standards in Athens and they have fought that fight for years and survived...they ain't gonna be touched by this no matter how high a profile case it is....they are as entrenched in ACC Politics as any business can be.

Toppers opened around 92. I was living at River Mill at the time but moved to a loft apartment above Flanagans and Half Moon Pub later. Toppers was about a long Lob wedge from my doorstep.

And there was also Chelsea’s on Baxter Street.

I think the big scoop most people get is that UGA hires young females for the "recruiting staff", who are probably also students, to...errr...escort football recruits and players to strip joints, get wasted with them, then go home with them in UGA provided vehicles.

A scared 16-year-old from the sticks knocks on the door at Effie's house. Effie comes to the door with that magnificent 2-foot-tall beehive hair do sticking up majestically and asks "Honey do you want to see a girl?" Scared 16-year-old lowers his eyes and says "I don't know." Effie says "Honey, come on in, nobody's gonna bit you in here." She was the best businesswoman that ever walked the face of the earth. I've been told by people whose words I trust that she was very very generous to people in need and a huge contributor to philanthropic causes in general. To top it all off, she sponsored a little league baseball team that absolutely dominated the Athens Little League for years. She had to do all this anonymously. The fact that this was the case says more about the world at large than it does about Effie.

The world was a better place with Effie in it.

If the AJC was actually interested in investigative journalism, they would find the footage of them entering the establishment to see if they players and staff members arrived together or were just being picked up. As it is, we don't know if that is the case or not, but I'm sure they don't care - they're getting their clicks.

That's because it was on Baxter St. Graduated in 1993.

ETA: Chelsea's was it. Named in an earlier post.

The attorneys for victim will get footage from Toppers. I’m sure the authorities already have possession.
