While today "Phoenix" is the universally accepted spelling for the mythical bird, "Phenix" was a widely recognized variant in the 1800s. When the original Eagle Mill in nearby Columbus, Ga was burned by Union troops in 1865, its owners rebuilt it with the intention of symbolizing a rebirth from the ashes. They officially named the new corporation the Eagle and Phenix Manufacturing Company in 1866. As the mill grew to become the largest textile plant in the South, its specific corporate branding—and its precise spelling—became dominant across the Chattahoochee River valley. During the Reconstruction and Victorian eras, American and British dictionaries, literature, and major newspapers (including the New York Times) frequently used the "Phenix" spelling. When the mill owners named the factory in 1866, they were using a spelling that was completely normal for their time. When the neighboring Alabama town of Brownville decided to change its name in February 1897, the local citizens wanted to honor the massive industrial powerhouse across the river where many of them worked. Rather than using the classic Greek spelling, the city organizers adopted the mill's exact corporate spelling to cement the community's identity.
