I mean this year and 2012 were good, but A&M's recent history seems to be lacking as well. Check out AP Poll finish by season:

I mean yes, A&M is having a relatively good season this year. But it will be the first great season in eight years... and only the second great season in a quarter century.

When you have three significant 10-year+ gaps of basically zero success, that will really set your program back. You've got a lot of catching up to do. Granted so did Clemson and they've come storming back in just a 10-year period. But it will take a Clemson-like run for A&M just get up on par to the BIG 6 from a historical success standpoint.

A&M is building a foundation. Not going away - three top classes in a row, and it will be the new normal. No more Sumlin recruits, and constant influx of talent from here on out

We can actually compete with the better SEC teams now
