Football, aside from the very few, is a net negative hobby.

It isn't worth the emotional, financial, and physical investment. We work hard for our leisure time and dollars, why waste it on something that will let you down year after year? Only thing that lasts is alcohol and hit comedy shows.

Alcohol is the only undefeated team in college football history.

It is more like gambling. One winning season makes you forget a decade of heart break.

The thing about football fandom is the highs are so high.

I will remember the Saints Superbowl my entire life. I will remember celebrating with family, and seeing Drew hold up that trophy. That one moment was worth every moment the decades prior when I wanted to put a bag on my head.

I never felt that great about a movie I saw, or a comedy show, or even a vacation. I have memories that stick with my for a lifetime from all of those, but none have the sense of family and community that the Superbowl did.

That is why we do it.

I was thinking about this a lot after the Michigan/OSU game. Like, was it worth it to have that heartbreak when there will be nothing to show for it? It was great entertainment for a few hours, but I'd almost rather just have the program in disarray so I don't even care.

Football allows me an emotional outlet. Normally, I am a very calm, relaxed, and logical person, but like anyone, my stress builds up over time. Yelling at the TV and being emotionally invested in games makes it so that my emotions can be released in a passive manner, rather than deciding to kill someone driving like an idiot.

Well fan is short for fanatic which is defined as:

Definition of fanatic
: marked by excessive enthusiasm and often intense uncritical devotion

so by definition, yes, being a fan can be a net negative hobby. It's worth it if you're a fan because that's what being a fan entails. No one decides to be a fan as a financial investment, otherwise you're probably not actually a fan

And as far as it being worth it, that lies with the individual. Some people play golf, horribly, and continue to play because they enjoy it. Same can be said about a multitude of different hobbies.

The key really is to take it one game at a time - even for fans. It blows my mind when people start predicting the playoff teams in September. Almost as if they're wanting the end of the season to get here more quickly.

I used to waste a lot more of my time watching games between teams I don't really give a shite about. Now I pretty much stick to LSU games, and just week to week. Don't get too high for the wins, and the losses won't be as bad. When the game is over, I just turn off the TV now instead of looking for another game or some 'analysis' of the game I just watched. frick that shite, my time is too valuable, I've got shite to do.

Geez man, how apoplectic were you that another grown man had to break down and give you some fatherly advice on a Monday morning?

I think the direction College football is going is its pretty much national champs or bust. having a good year going to a bowl game will get you fired.

One thing I will say, is when you are a fan of a team like Bama, the hardest thing to take is a loss. We have been consistently spoiled and blessed over the past 9 years with success, that when something goes wrong, it SUCKS. I can recall literally every loss we've had in the amount of time Saban has been here and it still stings. Even if there haven't been that many, I can remember how sucky and frustrating it is to lose.

...regardless, it's all worth it. I love the game. We all know that you can't win everything all the time. I've learned to accept this reality. In retrospect, Bama probably wouldn't have won-out last year had they not had that loss to Ole Miss. But, I will always crave undefeated seasons and get all competitive over it.

You know this is one of the advantages of being a Vandy fan. Seriously. When we win big like this past Saturday, it's awesome but when we lose, it stings for a bit then we move on. I'd say the Vandy fans are some of the best in the nation. Loyal. I mean if you had our history, I'd bet most of you would have just switched allegiance to Bama or something long ago. The wins are great, but we make it though the bad just fine. Yeah, I know what you are all thinking right now; fine, but you've got that Champions of LIfe title thing going now.

Agreed, people wanted playoffs and campaigned for it for years, but what they didn't take into account is what the result would be if you were out of the picture. That, along with the abundance of bowls, have made the rest of the postseason rather meaningless. Bowls are no longer so much determined by how well you did but more based on what matchup will draw more fans, when teams last played in that bowl game, etc. It is much more aligned with what bowls were when national champs were determined after the regular season, glorified exhibitions. They just don't mean much anymore unless you're a school that hasn't played in the postseason in years. The only real purpose they serve is additional practice time. When the Sugar Bowl is contractually obligated to take a 4 loss SEC team because they're the highest ranked SEC team not in the CFP, it takes away what the Sugar Bowl once meant.
