9 Game Schedule Question

Do you think they'll use the old divisions breakdown as to which group gets the extra H game?

When are they doing 9 games?

A 9th game gives 8 teams an extra loss. I'm not sure how much push there's gonna be for it until they ESPN/ABC offer gets much higher and maybe the auto-qualifiers for the playoffs go away. I doubt any coaches want it, and Sankey isn't gonna want to risk getting a 3rd, 4th, 5th team in because of a 3rd loss.

You know it's going to happen. & I think that's why they only did 2024 @ 8 for now.

Not doing 9 bc ESPN won’t pay for it. It’s a business decision.

No 9-game SEC schedule until ESPN/ABC ponies up some cash for it.

How many SEC fans have bought ESPN+ just to see their team play the 1AA or G5 opponent? I know I didn't, but I know several co-workers and neighbors who bought it just to see their team beat the shite out of NC A&T or whatever victim needed a payday to keep their athletic department open.
You add an additional conference game, then an 1AA or G5 game goes away, and there is less incentive for people - especially in SEC country - to keep ESPN+.
No disrespect to the die hards that will watch their school play women's chess on ESPN+.

I know about the extra loss, but do you want to continue to listen to the complaints of "HOW LONG between certain matchups"?
While I agree that an even # balances out things:
8 - complaints about delay in matchups
10 - complaints from 4 (former SEC East div.) schools only having 1 slot to play anybody since of their annual in-state OOC opponents (which is Game #11).
So which is the best of those options?

I think the current playoff contract with ESPN goes 2 more years. Then it is up for bid again. Within 2 years, could another League collapse. If FSU gets out of the ACC and goes say to the BIG12 (I don't think the SEC wants them given the way their Administration was threatening law suits left and right), then the ACC could go the way of the PAC12. I think between the BIG12 and ACC, the BIG12 probably can stay viable.
So by 2026 CFP, we could only have 3 P5 leagues which is when the new TV Deal for the CFP goes out. I am thinking Fox and ESPN are both going to have some of the games. At that point, I think the SEC can renegotiate its TV Deal with ESPN and that is when the league goes to 9 games.
In addition, the Top 60 Schools could be then totally break away and form a League whereby TV Moneys that the top 3 leagues get are then shared with players.
The current G5 is not going to be able to economically be in the same League with the P5, they shouldn't be in reality anyway, so once the top 60 or so schools break away and start allocating their share of TV revenues to the players, with collective bargaining, the mirage of what today is 130 D1 schools playing football will end.
If a G5 Conference can get a TV network or streaming service via the marketplace to pay it $$$$ to compete with the top 60 schools in the P5, then they can be in that. If they can't, they form their own D1 G5 league and have their own playoff like D2 has.

There are so many teams now I don't really care about deli in match-ups anymore.
The conference is so big now it just doesn't matter how often we play people so long as we keep 3-4 games annually that each school wants to maintain the identity of the conference.
For Ole Miss, give me Arkansas, LSU, State and Alabama every year.

No pay, no play.
This year's SEC schedule already looks more daunting than most teams not BAMA can handle.

Scott Woodward, LSU AD, is on record saying that LSU "would like" to have Texas A&M, Ole Miss and Alabama as permanents in a 3-6 schedule format.
Assuming LSU gets those 3, then LSU would play probably OU on the final weekend for 2 years (like we are this year) and Arkansas in the other 2 years. This would work if you play 3-6 for 2 years (the 6 in years 1 and 2 home and home) then rotate 6 on and play them for 2 years.
For Ole Miss, my thinking is 3 of those you will like get. Alabama, when Saban was there when their 3 permanents was Auburn/TENN and LSU, did not want LSU as the 3rd. Now that he is gone maybe LSU/Bama stays on the schedule. If LSU/Bama goes away, maybe Ole Miss/Bama stays on with your other 2 being State and LSU.

There won't be a 9th game until ESPn is willing to pony up to the SEC for the added inventory. It's why we haven't already done it. ESPN wants to pay the same for 9 games as it currently is for 8. Sankey kind-of screwed the pooch on this one. But until that happens SEC is staying with 8.

I thought the SEC's renewal with ESPN was this year. So how does that factor into the 9-game discussion?

Is an absolutely stupid idea.

The current (2024) system makes us play each SEC team twice in a 4-year period. (1 perm and 7 rotate).
If we go to 9 games, it will be 3 perms and 6 rotate. We'll play each SEC team at least twice per 4 year cycle.
Going to a 9 game SEC schedule gives no real advantage (as compared to our 8 game schedule) in terms of playing every SEC team more often.
Unless our new media partner will give each of us more $$$, stay with the 8-team schedule is my opinion.

Alabama - Auburn, Tennessee, MSU
UGA - Auburn, Florida
MSU - Alabama, Mississippi
Tennessee - Alabama, Vanderbilt
So WHICH of those ANNUAL rivalries are you going to end for the 1-7 setup?

you been in a coma or just ignored all scheduling talk?
Most here don’t want a 1/7
Most here prefer a 3/6 or 3/5 at 8 games
That being said.. MSU isn’t playing Alabama this year..
As for 2025, we could play the same schedule that we are playing in 2024.. swap Home field.. if we need to buy an extra year for some reason
The 3/5 works good imo for 8 gms
you play 3 perm every year
you play 6 teams 2x in 4 years
you play 6 teams 2x in 6 years
It’s not perfect like a 3/6, but it works better than a 1/7
Posted on 1/15/24 at 8:11 pm to BigBro
as an example, here is a 3/5 model
It’s really not all that different than a 3/6.. you just have to choose whether you want to rotate the bigger schools in the middle or bottom group
