5 star rating through the years

Does anyone else think that 5 stars are way too common now? 5 stars used to be a handful of players. 10 at the absolute most. Now there are like 30+. I don't think that talent levels are going up since then, I just think the water that a 5 star rating held has dropped. Rating a lot of these kids as 5 stars isn't really just, IMO. 5 star should be players who could have an argument for being drafted in the first round out of high school.

Going back several years, it seems like 5 stars were a rare site. Julio Jones, Adrian Peterson, Reggie Bush, Clowney. Names like that were what came to mind when talking about 5 stars.

Recruiting board.
But I do think the talent level is increasing. Kids coming out of high school are more ready to play in college now than they were 10-20 years ago.

I didn't know which board with suffice. Most traffic is on the rant for this type of thing and the recruiting guys like to discuss current classes and stuff. I was more or less trying to shine light on how rare 5 stars used to be back just 5-10 years ago. The 5 star rating should be for NFL ready high schoolers.

There is no such thing. It should be for the guys that are thought to be NFL first round talents for sure, but a guy out of high school being an NFL ready tackle? Center? Guard? DT? End? MLB? Size alone all of that is impossible. QB? No effing way. WRs and RBs have some of the hardest transitions to the pros as timing and footwork never used to be important... CBs and safeties are the most athletic positions, but even that is laughable.

That was during a time where the only thing recruiting gurus had to go on was the Forrest Davis Recruiting Guide. I remember my dad buying that rag every single year all throughout the 1990s.
Now with the advent of broadband internet as well as the fact that recruiting is more popular among the general fan population than ever, it is much easier for analysts to evaluate thousands upon thousands of players every single year.
As the amount of players that are analyzed increase, so does the talent pool, as players that wouldn't have been discovered by analysts 20 years ago are being discovered in greater numbers now.

The amount of 5 stars given is directly proportional to how many kids are offered by bama.

The definition of 5-star athlete used to be, according to recruiting services, is a player capable of coming in on day 1 and making an instant impact on the program; granted, a 3 star kid at UAB can potentially have a bigger impact on that program than a 5 star kid going to a powerhouse with a stacked depth chart, but it was basically reserved for those kids so good that you couldn't keep them off the field as freshmen.
I just checked and rivals has conveniently changed that definition from several years ago. Now, a five star athlete is considered to be one of the top 25-30 athletes in the country, essentially ensuring a large amount of 5 star players. That's a pretty bulllshit definition. I agree that, even in a STACKED class, the number of 5 star athletes shouldn't really exceed 8-10.

I would like to see a retrospective evaluation of recruits after they have finished their college career. I have always thought the 5 star hype was crap especially when a lot of guys play crappy teams all through high school. I like snagging those under the radar 3 star guys who just play their arse off. It's all hit or miss IMO.

Yea man it's total crap. Pure coincidence the teams with the most 4 and 5 stars are almost always the teams competing for the NC.
