The College Football Playoff is nearing a deal to expand to 24 teams, per sources. The new format will start in 2027 and is expected to come together in the near future, pending final approvals.

Wondering if this will be the last year for the SECCG. LINK

Interesting once the Big10 got NIL, conferences, and scheduling adjusted how they wanted, suddenly they are on board for playoff expansion.

By the way, The SEC rule of requiring football teams to to play at least one Power opponent (or "major" out-of-conference team) each season needs to stop IMMEDIATELY.

9 conference games, plus an SECCG plus a 12 team playoff plus adding two additional heavyweights in Texas and Oklahoma...

Yeah, that pedophile looking phaggot Greg Sankey totally isn't out to destroy the conference...

I guess Georgia doesn't have to worry. They'll rest their starters in the regular season and trust the refs to handle the rest...

I assume the SECG will be done away with. But just devalues the whole regular season. Who cares who wins between Alabama-Georgia or Alabama-LSU. They are all in anyway. Teams will start resting players the last week or two of the season. Just a horrendous idea.

RIP to the greatest regular season in sports. Games like last Saturday…which were already watered down….now will mean nothing.

Gonna have to move the AU game up otherwise we’ll be resting starters. No point scheduling a big OOC because you’ll want your team healthy for the playoffs.

Great job everyone. Ruined the sport for something no fans wanted.

I will always say that college football needed some changes from what it was 20 years ago. But almost every year I'm finding it more and more difficult to really lock-in and be a hardcore college football Bama fan.

You will legitimately have teams at the top resting starters towards the end of the regular season, just like you do in the NFL.

Nobody is going to risk getting their star QB or WR hurt before the playoffs if you've already locked in a top 4 seed.

I do not think this is going to kill the regular season like many think. It will keep more teams in the playoff hunt so, paradoxically, the deemphasis of the regular season over national titles drives more broad fan interest. Practically, more involvement is necessary to make the NIL side work.

However, at this number I think we need a structure that assures “division winners” (subdivisions of a conference) participate automatically and leave the at large pool to RPI. Conference championship games should not exist. Conferences should subdivide into division commiserate to their auto bids.

That’s why I think the conferences should subdivide based on their auto bids. Make winning your division the focus because it can localize the competition a bit. Alabama, Auburn, MSU, and Ole Miss in a division fighting for a bid every year.

Every major sport has a playoff at the end of the season so I understand your point. People still watch the games......I have a lot of questions about it, but until the playoff plan comes out, its just a lot of speculation.

We could just pencil in Ohio State and Notre Dame 99% of the time so there goes 2 spots.

If one thing is certain in college football it’s that the unintended consequences that many dismiss usually come to fruition. It didn’t take a genius to figure out that “money for jerseys or autographs” would turn into multi-million dollar NIL deals. That unlimited transfers would hurt player development. That paying a coach a guaranteed $100 contract could cause him to mail it in. That add more meaningless bowls would water down all of the bowls. That expanding the playoff will still cause a meltdown from the team that’s just missed out. That the expanded playoff would disincentivize strong out of conference scheduling.

You’re going to see players kept out towards the season. Enthusiasm for regular season games will go down because the stakes are literally lower. The big tent pole regular season games like Ohio State-Texas or Alabama-UGA…the games that traditionally drive the sport…won’t mean that much. Hell, we’ve already seen that happen in the last few years and simply moving the emphasis to games involving 25th and 24th ranked teams for the last spot doesn’t make up for it.

Or… hear me out… make the P4 schools play each other. Nobody can schedule a G6 school.

Make SEC teams play

6 games vs SEC opponents
2 vs BIG
2 vs ACC
2 vs B12

And same for every other conference

Subsidize the G6 schools and make them play their own playoff/bowls. Or put one of them in at #24 - whatever.

I like that this kills the meaningless bowls with 2nd teamers and walk ons and brings more meaningful/ entertaining football to December/January.

There is another option. If SEC really wanted to, they could tell Sankey and the Big10 to go screw themselves. The SEC has the power and money to break away from everyone and form their own football league. Along with other teams that may want to be part of it. Then finally put an SEC guy in charge of the league again that didn't bend the knee to outside forces.

And while I'm dreaming, lets bring in professional refs for the league.

Who isn't clamoring for Alabama vs North Texas at BDS in the first round of the cfp??? It's going to be lit! At this rate even auburn will eventually make the playoff.

The closest we ever got to perfect was a 4 team playoff with BCS computers selecting the teams.

Now this endless lust for money...even more than pre NIL...has these geniuses destroying the game. But they all get filthy rich...from admins to players...and literally none give a crap about the game 10 years down the road. They will have all "gotten theirs" and that's all that really matters.
