2007 LSU-Bama seems like a forgotten classic

On my lunch break, I enjoy watching some highlights of old games while I enjoy a meal. Thanks to a fellow ranter for posting these highlights on YouTube.
I was at this game with the Tiger Band, sitting right in front of where DJ Hall scored on the long TD pass and where the Caddell reception was ruled incomplete. It would definitely be a catch under current rules.
This game had it all. Saban back at Bama, has them ranked in year 1. LSU currently at #3, Les in peak Hat form. Tigers race to a 17-3 lead, only to see Bama bounce back and go into the half up 20-17 with all the momentum. Tied at 27 in the 4th, Javier Arenas takes a punt to the house and ignites the crowd in one of the loudest explosions of noise I’ve ever encountered on the road.
Matt Flynn leads the Tigers on a courageous TD drive to tie it at 34 with under 3 to go. Tying score from Doucet came on a crossing route on 4th and 4. Shortly after, Chad Jones with the sack and strip of JP Wilson, setting up a short TD.
Bama doesn’t give up, and Wilson throws a strike to Keith Brown around the 35, but the ball is jarred out on a hit to give LSU the ball and the win.
You can tell this Bama team is coming quickly. LSU finishes a bumpy title ride, as this game sparks a rivalry loaded with great ones for the next several years.

The team had a second wave of buy in and confidence after the Tennessee win. Once the shot at the SEC West was gone with this loss they just completely collapsed.
It wasn't a particularly well played game but it was a wild arse ride.

The Javier Arenas punt return was perhaps the second loudest I have ever heard it at Bryant Denny stadium (2nd after the 2005 Florida game). The place went bonkers.

What a great game. Craig Steltz was the guy that jarred the ball loose. He could hit.
That was the game where you started to feel like it was only a matter of time for Saban to have Alabama playing for titles.

That game, UT game, Georgia game, and the Arkansas game made me know Saban was on the right track.

I think that's probably due to the fact that both LSU and Bama played a lot of those type of games during that year. Bama had ten games decided by seven points or less while LSU had six games decided by seven points or less that year. You think back to Bama's 2007 season and the first games that come to mind are the Arkansas and Georgia games and of course the Louisiana Monroe loss. And the first memories that come to mind for 2007 LSU is them converting a bunch of fourth downs late in the fourth quarter to beat Florida, the last second TD to beat Auburn, and the two overtime losses to Kentucky and Arkansas. Both teams were involved in a number of more memorable and interesting contests so the Bama-LSU game gets stuck in the backburner. It was a really good game though.

How did you feel after being Croomed and losing to ULM?

It’s hard to imagine today that a Saban led Bama team once lost to both

It was a great game. The anger over the DJ Hall overturned catch had Patrick Peterson-level potential but we ended up not winning another regular season game so it just became irrelevant. That game was also the last time DJ Hall gave a shite

Well, that Florida game must have been maddening. I was at this '07 game. When Arenas got to around the 30 and it was obvious he was going to score it was absolutely ear-splitting.

Still aggravated that JPW seemingly just flung the ball over his head for the turnover.

I do the same thing except my favorite is the 2018 A&M vs LSU Game. I mean how does a game get any better than this. Seven OT's, Coach O getting drenched with Gatorade too early. Kellen Mond finally beating LoserSU for the first time since A&M joined the SEC, Jimbo beating LoserSU in his first season at A&M, and the best part is Joe Burrows crying like a baby on the sidelines. Nothing better than watching LoserSU getting their arse handed to them on national television.

Man I was miserable in those stands at halftime. Felt like we were about to let it get out of hand after pretty fast start. Rollercoaster of emotions that night for sure. I can still feel the excitement from the Chad Jones sack fumble in my bones.

Personally, I'm partial to the 2005 LSU/Bama game. Bama came in undefeated but I believe they had 0 offensive TDs in their last 2 or 3 games. LSU had only 1 loss to Tennessee, I believe both were in the top 5. Bama was up 10-0 at half finally scoring a TD. LSU came back to score 10 unanswered of their own in the 2nd half, Laron Landry laid Croyle out, LSU won 16-13 in OT.

Fun game and win for LSU but the fact that in year one we needed a scoop fumble to win vs Saban was very telling.

Yeah I like the way bama fans act like they were a dumpster fire before saban got there and they were in the top 5 in '05. It wasn't that tough of a rebuild.
