I would've thought we'd have carried a border county in Georgia. That surprised me.

I'm calling BS that there are as many LSU fans in my zip code as Southern Miss fans. There are way more Southern Miss fans.

Does the NYT know where Auburn is located in the state of Alabama?

I think the results probably understate how visible a team is in an area. I think there are a ton of "fans" who probably don't outwardly show allegiance, but just loosely affiliate with some team when they don't really care. The 10-15% Auburn in Coweta and Fayette is seen pretty heavily, to the extent that people often comment that it's close to even with UGA (it isn't, but there Auburn fans are more visible, while a lot of people casually follow UGA).

For example, Alabama is basically second in a 75% of counties in the southeast, but you don't feel that presence everywhere. I bet the Cowboys would have a similar number.

The Mississippi Coast has always been LSU country. It's less than two hours from Gulfport to Baton Rouge.

"With data based on Facebook ‘likes’, we estimated the boundaries of fandom for 82 teams."

Statistical accuracy is assured

You probably do. The study uses Facebook and likes of schools. You have a lot of people who like both auburn and UGA in West Georgia so UGA gets those votes as well.
