I’m sure one of you guys know, which sport makes more money, baseball or basketball? You know, during a year like just passed when both were successful. Both are fun when they are winning, but baseball pales in comparison to basketball to an energy, excitement and pace of play standpoint compared to basketball. Not to mention it’s in a climate controlled atmosphere.

Keith Carter is our AD and he cares about basketball way more than baseball. We just went to a sweet sixteen in basketball and football won 10 games. State can’t compete in football and basketball with NIL so why not throw it all in baseball. If the football program and basketball start struggling baseball will have an opportunity to take some NIL from them.

Mississippi State just became Southern Miss. Good baseball program with a trash football program and a decent basketball program.

Like yeah O’Conner is a great hire but good lord is it stupid to spend that much money on a sport that won’t come close to the revenue football or basketball produces. Let them celebrate while the rest of the sane ADs in the nation just laugh and say “you do you boo boo”

I think it's the smartest thing an AD at MSU could do.

You were hired at a University that just a year before had lost a legend roaming the sidelines to a sudden health episode and gone winless in SEC football right ?! You have a trash coach on the baseball diamond that won the school's first Natty (after coming within a pube hair in recent history in other sports) with another coach's roster. Tough spot but gotta let him go. What do you have working in your favor ? The best college baseball stadium in the country and you had the balls to fire your coach first. Your only real competition for an offseason baseball hire is Georgia Tech and come the frick on ?!? Georgia Tech baseball vs Mississippi State baseball ?! You can frick up a football or basketball hire a dozen times down there but you CANNOT dookie up a baseball search. Need the best (or one of the best) manning your dugout because that's what the fanbase and big $ alumni crave. BOC is just that and will have them in position to win more SEC and National Titles. 'Give the people what they want.' Zac Selmon did exactly that and self preservation triumphs yet again.

I'm actually interested in seeing the FY 2025 revenue numbers. I suspect that our baseball team ended up more profitable than our basketball team. Both teams were largely unsuccessful last season, with basketball being the more successful of the two. Basketball lost money and baseball made money. That regional brought in a ton of money, especially with the extra game. The question is, whether or not the money made from the NCAA tournament jumped basketball over baseball. I just don't think it did.

It's a really good question. I'm interested to see the answer myself. And just think about all the mulah that was lost by letting Murray State off the hook and missing that Super. Man oh man.

Men's basketball lost $1.3 million 2024-2025. For men's baseball, numbers aren't available for 2025, but they made just over a million in 2024.

https://cdispatch.com/sports/a-look-at-ole-miss-2024-financial-report/

For those struggling with the math, that's a $2 million gap between the programs.

The ceiling is higher for basketball. We are the worst program historically in the SEC so that’s not a surprise. But consistency will bring in more money. Just like it did with baseball when Bianco was hired.

For money? Maybe, but not for a success ceiling. Also, attendance for baseball has been down the last couple years...

If we put an extra $2 million annually in baseball (increasing at some annual inflation rate)...and if we put an extra $5 million annually in basketball (increasing at some annual inflation rate)..... then 50 years from now we will have more national championships in baseball than in basketball. (Probably like 2-3 to 0).

The baseball ceiling is higher, faster, more certain, and at a lower cost than basketball.

With a far lower return in terms of national notoriety and overall national perception of our brand.

Possibly... Possibly not. With the House settlement out, it's going to be even harder to win at basketball. The Big East is going to be king of that sport. The power 4 will put 80% on football 10% on basketball and 10% for everything else. Kentucky and Kansas will be the exceptions, but the BigEast is going to put 90% in basketball and 10% for everything else.

That 10% will go a lot farther in baseball than it will in basketball.

Basketball is so popular even this baseball thread is double the historic basketball season thread in length.

That's University funding, not NIL. The NIL collective will in all likelihood continue to prioritize MBB over baseball.

Florida v. Houston averaged 18.1 million viewers (peaking at 21.1). Tennessee v. A&M series last year averaged 2.82 million viewers. National perception of basketball v baseball isn't even close.

Lots of folks on here that are bigger basketball fans than they are baseball fans sure are stating their emotions as facts. If basketball were such a huge deal at Ole Miss, then one would think there'd be much better support for the sport than there currently is.

Ole Miss basketball has virtual zero shot at ever winning a NC with the goal just to make it to the NCAA tournament. Baseball, however, has proven that it can win the NC and be a national powerhouse in the sport.

It's great that you're a fan of a sport, but at least try to be realistic about things. If you love basketball more, then support it - NIL donations, buy tickets, etc... Basketball is "fun", but it's not a sport Ole Miss will ever be a national powerhouse in. Thinking otherwise is really delusional.

ETA: Look at this thread - 65 pages so far. The basketball thread made it to 34 pages. People are letting their emotions override actual judgement.

Yes-rooting for Murray State now. Then we can hire their coach. He knows how to improve a program and win consistently.
