Anyone know how either of the quarterbacks are looking?

Honestly I didn’t think Luke Altmeyer was bad in the time he played last year. And Dart doesn’t have a whole lot of experience coming from USC due to his injury.

honestly I’m concerned that Dart could be an interception machine. That’s my only fear, is that he’s going to force throws, has anyone heard of either quarterback look good, and any information on the rest of the players?

I agree with you on Luke. He was a 4* in hs for a reason, and considering how bad our OL was against Baylor, he looked as comfortable as a guy in his situation could be.

Also, just basing it off of the spring game, Dart very much seems like the type of guy to force throws and throw for a couple picks a game. I’m also telling myself that that was just because he only had 2 months to learn a new offense though, so who knows. Hopefully we’ll learn soon who is qb1 and how close/not close qb2 is to overtaking him

Neal's practice report from two days ago made it seem like Luke is probably the guy for right now. He ran with the 1's and Dart threw what would have likely been a pick-6 in a real game....apparently was visibly frustrated.

That being said....I wouldn't rule anyone a bust yet that's still getting used to the offense and receivers. He has a ton of catching up to do.

Altmyer's running ability and familiarity with the offense cannot be discounted.

I hope the best man wins, but I'm hoping the best man is Altmyer. After what felt like a decade or more of transfer QBs, it would be great to have two consecutive guys who were Ole Miss to the core. It would be even sweeter if Altmyer could continue our winning streak over his hometown Bulldogs

2016 - Kelly (tranfer), Shane Peterson
2015 - Kelly (transfer)
2014 - Wallace (transfer)
2013 - Wallace (transfer)
2012 - Wallace (transfer)
2011 - Mackey, Stoudt (transfer)
2010 - Masoli (transfer), Stanley
2009 - Snead (transfer)
2008 - Snead (transfer)
2007 - Adams (transfer), Schaeffer (transfer)
2006 - Adams (transfer), Schaeffer (transfer)

Shows you how bad we have been at developing a qb.

To be fair there aren’t many schools that just stack above average QBs on a yearly basis. Unless you are bama and can sign 2 5-stars a year to keep the room full.

You either have your guy or are working on bringing in a guy to take the job. I’m glad we got all the transfers we have over the last 15 years.

This year I think the one that doesn’t turn it over will keep the job. Both will get a fair shot and it’s going to come down to Dart not turning the ball over. He might have a higher ceiling but Kiffin will shite a brick if he’s turning the ball over more than once a game.

247 practice update today:

quote:

Here's your daily dose of quarterback battle news: I thought all three quarterbacks...Luke Altmyer, Jaxson Dart and Kinkead Dent...continued to throw the ball well today. There is no way of knowing who is ultimately going to take the lead at this early juncture of fall camp. I will say that Dart seemed to have the better day throwing the football. It wasn;t that Altmyer and Dent didn't throw it well...they did...but Dart really seemed to be on the money today. Dart and Altmyer split time with the one's, while Dent spent time with the three's and split time with the two's.

Hell Mackey was a transfer too. You could also argue that a few of those guys were responsible for our few good highlight seasons as well.

Also you left off Barry brunetti in 2011 from WVU

Hopefully he was just rusty in the spring.
His deep ball is elite. And although he’s not much of a runner, he is elusive in the pocket and can pick up a short first down. His accuracy looks good too. Hopefully his issues in the spring were being unfamiliar with the system and his receivers. I still think you start him because his ceiling is much higher than Altmyer.

Yeah his ceiling is higher than Altmyer. I could see the rough spring just being unfamiliar with everything. Could also be pushing too hard to prove immediately you belong

Dart was better today. The 2nd team offense is also better than the 2nd team defense so it may not mean much. We are going to run the ball a lot this year. Too many good backs.

Most importantly:

quote:

we did get a nice view of transfer kicker Jonathan Cruz. According to our stats, he finisheed the game 7-for-7 on field goals, hitting from distances 34, 42, 29, 43, 45, 29 and 41 yards from the right, middle and left.

Unfortunately, Lane's comments on the kicking performance was that the way "we" play that could be a seasons worth of FGs...

I mean I'm ok with that too.

But that's also coach speak. Lane is the offensive guru for us to obviously he's going to do the opposite of say that our kicking will get a lot of opportunities.

Whoever gets the starting job, I think we can take comfort in having Marcel Reed for the future. He is EXTREMELY underrated on the recruiting sites. I figure its because of his very slight frame, but he will be able to come here next year and redshirt behind whoever starts this year, put on much needed weight.

His deep ball is excellent and he is a perfect fit for Lanes offense. Super quick release with a whippy motion like corral. I am very excited to see Reed here in the coming years. Great arm talent and holds offers from Bama UGA Arkansas. Glad we got him as he seems locked in with Kiffin and Co.

He's raw, but has the tools to develop. Accuracy is shaky in the pocket and forces his fair share of throws. Hoping he looks a bit more polished this HS season.

ETA: from what I can find online it seems like he had a good start to the season last night. Reed completed 13-of-15 passes for 171 yards and accounted for two touchdowns in a 46-20 win Friday at Ravenwood,
