My wife turned down Vanderbilt to attend Ole Miss, back in the day.

I have mixed feelings on this.
First, there's a good education to be found anywhere if you're willing to find it.
Also, a lot of these rankings are based on selectivity. How selective should a university be that's supported by state tax dollars? I'm in the camp that if you're from the state, and you've got at least a reasonable chance of success, you should be able to sign up and take your shot.

These rankings are so dumb. If you do stem at any one of these schools your income is going to be about the same as a stem major from an Ivy. Somehow the laws of science and math don’t change from university to university. If you do liberal arts, your earning potential will be significantly less than an Ivy with the exception of maybe Vandy.

I agree. I’ve worked with extremely bright and capable people from many SEC schools so far in my career. These rankings are always ridiculous

A lot wrong with these rankings - and you nailed one of them here....
Selectivity is a really flawed metric when it is a simple ratio of acceptance/applications. These schools have figured that out, and aggressively court these HS students to apply. Low/No fee applications, test optional applications, using a common app where they can apply to multiple schools at the press of a button.... all of that makes it so easy to apply, which drives the denominator up and lowers the acceptance rate - makes the schools look better.
I was talking to an admissions counselor a few years ago - she said they get so many applications now that they actually have data science models that evaluate applications not just for qualifications - but also heavily weigh the liklihood of enrollment if accepted. They frequently pass over / do not accept some of the hightest performing most qualified students because they know that even if accepted they will most likely enroll elsewhere.

Calling the Ivies “liberal arts schools” doesn’t mean they lack engineering programs. All eight appear in the 2027 U.S. News undergraduate engineering rankings.
Here are the rankings for Ivy League and SEC schools in the doctorate-offering engineering category:

If the argument is about money, MSU can have higher reported earnings than an individual Ivy in a particular major. But that doesn’t establish an advantage over the Ivies as a group. For example, the U.S. Department of Education’s published median earnings one year after a chemical-engineering bachelor’s degree are $78,183 for MSU and $55,154 for Columbia—but $85,578 for Cornell.
So which specific major do you have in mind, and what evidence makes MSU the better choice? A higher earnings figure than one Ivy in one field does not establish that MSU is a better choice than Ivy League schools generally.
