It’s the best part of UGA’s campus. Hard to say you properly saw the University without seeing that. Don’t want to overly build it up, but I loved that walk going to classes. I went to a basketball game in Gainesville a few years ago, but I didn’t really get to experience it so I know I don’t have a proper view of it. Same for Baton Rouge and Tuscaloosa for me. Everywhere else I feel like I know pretty well.

That’s a fair rebuttal. Like I said, I’ll give it another go for football sometime.

I did find it weird how the students would clap right before their players were shooting free throws. Maybe that doesn’t distract them, but... seemed odd.

You just posted a map that doesn’t include Athens on it and saying it is a suburb of Atlanta? Lol.

My thoughts on Athens. by ForeverGator
I went to Athens on Saturday for the Florida-Georgia game. Here’s my observations:

1) The Steg is shitty. How can Georgia not afford to replace it? it has had several recent upgrades. I think it is 100 times better than before. but it was that bad before. as has been said, with no real estate options it will only see expensive face lifts.
2) Downtown is super overrated (but I can see partiers liking it) what is your definition of a good downtown? for a college town, you are hard pressed to find 10 better in the entire country.
3) The campus buildings are ugly. that is true for a lot of campus. even the brick buildings lack aesthetics (circa 70s, 80s, and 90s). the newest ones have more appeal. The reality is that you spend more time inside the buildings. The college appeal is inside.
4) Georgia fans really don’t know basketball. baby steps. 2 sellouts in a row. the students are finally starting to pay attention. it will take a minute of success to improve.
5) Creature Comfort was good, but super crowded and slow.
6) The weather was crappy, so may have had some effect on the atmosphere.
7) Athens is in the middle of nowhere. I know what you mean. when I travel the world and head back home... I'm saying WTF. they put the United states in the middle of effing nowhere. Mexico shitstain to the south and about 30M cannucks to the north spread out over 3.8M square miles. the middle of nowhere.

They may have sold out in tickets, but it certainly was not at capacity.

There were plenty of empty seats above the students in the corner (not sure if that was part of the student section either).

I don't have a dog in this fight, but I went to both Athens (for baseball) and Gainesville (for football) last year. I would agree that the north part of the UGA campus is definitely the better part, and the connection with downtown is what gives Athens its reputation as a great college town. I do think that even the the north end, the architecture is not quite what it might be, but it is night and day different from the area around the basektball arena. But, the UGA campus definitely has more interesting topography than UF. The central part of the UF campus is fairly nice from an architectural standpoint, but it's not so great that UF fans should be taking potshots at the UGA campus.

Gainesville, the town, didn't have a lot to recommend it for a visiting fan--not many hotels, and just about impossible to get around by car. Athens, as a town, certainly has more going for it. We flew into Gainesville, which is a plus in that you have that option, but the drive from ATL to Athens was no big drawback (although Auburn is easier to reach from Hartsfield).

Lol. There are a lot of hotels in Gainesville.

I do admit our town is more spread out, so you do have to Uber or drive to other areas.

And I can shite on Georgia’s campus all I want. Doesn’t hold a candle to UF’s.

Their downtown is better, as I said.

I just ASSUMED it would give you perspective on the size of metro Atlanta and Athens is about 25 mins from the NE tip of Gwinnett County on the map.

Which way did you go to Athens BTW?78?

Forbes rates it as one of the top 10 towns in America to retire in but I’m sure you are a better source. It’s not in the middle of no where. It’s 30 minutes from suburban Atlanta.

Whatever shitty roads between Macon to Athens since I had to get off the interstate to cut up. 55 mph speed limit that entire time. Ugh.

OP spends most of his post talking about how shitty, ugly, and overrated Athens is.

Concludes by saying it was a good time and would come back again lol. Alrighty then

I'm guessing maybe 3 or 4 if he walked from Steg to Sanford.
