My gf's family is Dutch-American, and they speak it a lot. It's close to English so I'm thinking about picking it up. Just made me curious as to how many Southerners are fluent in a foreign language. A few words or phrases doesn't count Louisiana folks! ;)

Lived with a Dutchman for a while. Go visit him every now and then.

In college I studied German and Spanish. I can get around in Spanish speaking countries but my German is fading.

I can understand most southern dialects and some canadian ones but I never mastered rap or emoji so I am screwed.

Does watching Swamp People and not needing to read the subtitles count?

They are, however, working in the BOH of every single chain sit-down restaurant. And most that are a step or two higher in quality. Easily the hardest working group in any place I've been.

I lived in Italy for years, married an Italian (2nd wife) so yeah, I am fluent... but it was easy to learn having had a strong foundation in Spanish and French.
We still spend a ton of time in Italy, so I stay current even with the new slang.
Language is all about opening your mind and emersing yourself in it - including TV shows and reading books you're familiar with in English - start with children's books and work up. Everything will eventually click.
Warning .... do not use foreign porn as a language learning tool.

English and German are both used in our house everyday. My wife is German and our son is being brought up speaking both languages. I can speak enough of it to get around the city and order beer/food but that's about it.

Used to speak Greek and Spanish decently, but I've lost most of that due to disuse.
Need to pick up Spanish again.

I can do two women at once, but my tongue does get tired at times.

Wow Scroo, i'd have never expected that, and I don't mean that in a bad way at all. My grandpa had a PhD and drove an old silverado with a gun rack. I lived and studied in France, so I'm fluent in it but wish I could practice more. What's your favorite city/region of italy?
