I have four inside dogs a male papillon. a female chihuahua/daschund Mix. and two female rat teriers I've always heard folks say rat terriers kill mice/rats. I have noticed that both of these rat terriers will try their darndest to catch one if they ever see one in my house

Pretty sure any dog will try to kill any rat it sees. At least from my experience

In old days they were used to dig rats out of their holes in the fields

We had one growing up. She killed pretty much everything within her reach with the exception of snakes. She barked like crazy, but wouldn't attack them.

Terriers and terrier mixes were bred specifically to kill anything small and furry that squeaks. That head shake they do if you are having a tug of war with them is the dogs way of breaking a rat's neck. Wonderful dogs, great pets... probably don't want to combine owning one and raising hamsters.

Yes, they were bred to be ratters. I have two and they are very efficient at ratting. They’ll also go after moles and chipmunks.

They like adults but not kids. They’re great companions and are very smart and quiet. They need about two hours of exercise every day.

All terriers were bred to hunt vermin that live in holes(rats, moles, rabbits,etc.). They're incessant diggers and tenacious for their size. I've had Scottish and Australian terriers, and both breeds have very similar characteristics.
Side note: Their tails were cropped so that the handler could reach down in the hole, grab the stub tail, and yank dog and varmint out at the same time!

That's an interesting factoid. You learn the neatest things on here sometimes.

Before that the handler'd reach in there and often times grab a hand full of dick...and that wasn't good for the dog nor the handler (usually a badly bitten hand resulted!)

I have never been pulled by my penis but I can assure you... I would react very poorly to it!

A working dog doing what it was born to do.

Oh no! The poor rat/mouse/mole!

Piffle. There is no great shortage of vermin. This is actually a natural and "organic" way to grow crops.

I’ve had a few over the years & have a 12 year old one now. They’ve all killed anything & everything that moved-rats, snakes, rabbits, cats, squirrels. They are the best all around dogs; small enough to live in the house & take anywhere car, boat, camper but they are tough as nails & handle outside living great. They back down from nothing. Great watchdogs

My in-laws have two and they kill just about anything they can catch within a qtr mile of their house. They have about 150 acres with over 1/2 of it woods. Those dogs have brought home all kinds of shite smaller than them.

Have two Rat Terriers and work on Rat Terrier adoptions and transportation between adoption.

Phenomenal breed with lightning fast reflexies. They kill rats.

Dunno about rat terriers, but my Manchester terrier caught two within a week after it flooded around here. I couldn't believe how fast that dog's reactions were...those mice had no chance and we didn't see any after that.

I'd like to get a rat terrier. I have a Blue Heeler and a Cane Corso. The Heeler will kill anything it can. They are surprisingly quick for their size.

My rat terrier kills snakes and lizards. He’s also in a routine chicken session every morning with a doe that eats in the yard. The deer has almost stomped him a few times, but he harasses the ever-living shite out of that deer. Completely fearless.
