Food wise, Birmingham is outstanding. Pound for pound, Birmingham has as good of a restaurant scene as almost any other city in the county.
New Orleans and Birmingham have very similar sized metro areas, I think New Orleans takes the cake pretty easily when compared to Bham's food scene. Charleston probably edges out Bham as well, with a much smaller metro area. Not trying to take anything away from Bham's food scene, but i don't think its "pound for pound" the best in the South, much less the country

So we should sit on the sidelines and wait for other cities to take the lead? If we're talking about being a progressive city, let's be progressive and do something no other Southern city our size offers. Copying what other cities do isn't being progressive, it's being a copycat. Birmingham can't pay for itself, but who's to say we couldn't have lobbied for Federal money? How much money is being spent on the Northern Beltline? Imagine what that money could do for the city's infrastructure.

I'm a big fan of the Northern Belt Line. Its a much needed part of a long term transportation plan.

I said "almost" any other. There are exceptions. New Orleans is the best in the county possibly regardless of size. New Orleans also has pro-sports and is a tourist destination. Birmingham isn't anywhere near that. I'd trade Highlands, Bottega, and Hot & Hot in a heartbeat for Peche. I'm just making the point that Birmingham can hold it's own.

Zagat named Bham as the #1 Next Hot Food City. There are a lot of restaurant projects that are coming down the pipe that will continue to add to our food scene. Its a shame though that some people just think "Dreamland Ribs" when they think of Birmingham food.

The prior convo was between Memphis and Birmingham.

I'm just saying that a light rail network in Bham would be a monumental waste of money, money that wouldn't be there to put back. There's simply not enough demand. I could maybe see one in Nashville and could definitely see one in the Raleigh/Durham area, but Birmingham wouldn't have the daily numbers to make it feasible.

I don't know how I feel about it, other than I fear it will just lead to more urban sprawl which I'm not really a fan of. But then I live south of 459 in urban sprawl, so I'm being a hypocrite I guess.

Instead of packing more crap into the southern corridors of Hwy 31 and Hwy 280, it'll open up northern corridors like Hwy 75 and Hwy 79 for expansion. It'll also open up the Warrior River for development which is the closest body of water to Bham. It's also commercially navigable.

My wife and I tried to turn the Bham Bowl into a staycation. The only transportation from the Tutwiler Hotel to Legion Field was a fricking taxi. The hotel didn't run a shuttle. We need a viable and safe downtown transit system to take the next step.

I don't want to see Bham turn into Atlanta or Nashville either. I'd much rather be thought of in the same light as Chattanooga or Charlestown or Savannah.

This isn't the study that listed all the other cities that could host NFL, NBA, and NHL but it's a recent one focusing on Birmingham. MLB is WAY WAY WAY out of reach but the other 3 are clearly in reach. The methodology shows that most of the cities listed except for Las Vegas and probably Austin could only support one of the Big 3 leagues. The methodology focuses on the buying power of a metro and how much buying power it takes to have a franchise in an area.

The Ham could be adding a rail transit system soon.

I like Birmingham. It's trending in the right direction. Just suffers a lot because of the bad parts and the outskirts of Birmingham are growing at a faster rate, keeping people from having to travel to Birmingham and staying in their town. They need more major attractions. Hell, a Dave-n-Busters would be awesome.

Agreeance on any sort of betterment/addition to public transportation! I live in highland park so nothing is too far of a drive but I wish we had some sort of rail/trolly system. My friends and I (surely we aren't the only ones who have though this) were talking about how there needs to be a trolly type system that will take you to and from entertainment areas. Connect 5 points, lakeview, Avondale, uptown, and what is sure to soon be a hot spot - "midtown" (where regions and rail road park are located.) if they have the investors they say they do for that area, it is soon to be a great all around part of town to be in.

I live in Highland Park as well.

Would love to see a trolley system between all these entertainment districts as well. With the Steam plant opening up soon, hopefully some cool bars and rest. will open in there.

Also, I think the The Empire Hotel ( the top of the line Marriott hotel) and Redmont (top of the line Hilton Hotel) along with the Thomas Jefferson tower will have roof top bars.

Traffic downtown is going to be a bitch in a bout five years, and I wont complain one bit. Is going to be awesome to see our city grow.

Never quite understood why DnB hasn't come to Bham. It would kill it.

One thing I really want is Top Golf.

A rail transit system for Birmingham makes no sense whatsoever at this stage...it's just not necessary.

Better to build a northern loop and open up that part of the city to further development....that and they need to fix the 280 congestion....why that can't get done I don't understand.
