Birmingham City Council has raised minimum wage

Phased in through July 2017, minimum wage in Birmingham will be raised to 10.10.

Also of interest is that they just voted themselves a pay raise from $15,000 to $50,000 annually.

The really simple side is they may not have the legal right to establish a minimum wage at all. They passed it without waiting on the legal department's opinion or asking for an AG's opinion.
Oh, and on the council pay raise. To be accurate, they did not vote themselves a pay raise. Under Alabama law, they can't vote to give themselves a raise. Their vote was to increase the salary for the next city council, which won't be seated until 2017.
It may sound like nitpicking since the possibility exists that some or all will be reelected and get the new salary, but it really is an important point. If the salary's a big enough deal to voters, they can opt to replace those who approved the increase and thus deny them the chance to ever collect it.
I really hope they vote them out (but doubt they will). 50k's a huge salary for what's supposed to be a part time legislative position. STATE legislators only make $43,000 a year and that job (while still considered part time) requires a ton more of the officeholder's time than does the job of Birmingham city council.

With the positive momentum the city has had recently, its sad to see the old shitshow come back.

They can go back to their districts and claim they gave everyone a raise, not just themselves. It's so transparent, but most will be re-elected.

How can individual cities do this and what is the penalty if McDonald's doesn't comply?
ETA: I thought wage regulation was a federal thing?

Did they call it a "living wage" increase? For a part-time job that's a hefty increase.

Keep raising that minimum wage and eventually everyone will be paid the same thing because no one else can get a meaningful raise.

Agree. The city has made progress yet they're running around doing victory laps. Its like watching a RB do a celebration dance after getting a 4 yard gain.

35K yearly increase is some nice work.

Cities and states can set their own minimum wages, they just can't be lower than the federal wage, currently $7.25/h. Washington currently has the highest state minimum wage at $9.47/h.

States yes, but your mileage may vary with local jurisdictions depending on the state. Not all give that level of authority to political subdivisions.

Wow, minimum wage issues aside how could they possibly think that big of a pay raise for a part time position is appropriate or that they would ever get away with it without catching a ton of shite?
