There's a great bbq place on the edge of downtown savanna that fits that description... two choices... chicken or ribs.... with sauce or without sauce. To go only, styrofoam, cash. Black guys out back on homemade barrel smokers. Sold out by 1130 am daily. I don't even think they have sides. Location is one block past "I think I made a wrong turn " and line down the street at 11am.
Randy's it is called.
Eta do google img search of Randy's bbq savannah

The best chicken is at a gas station. Those shitty nasty gas stations in the middle of nowhere. So juicy, so tender.
After that I'd go
First baptist church Grove Hill, Al
Claunch Cafe in tuscumbia, Al
Zaxbys wings and things meal
Popeyes spicy chicken strips
Jacks chicken finger combo

Champy's Fried Chicken here in Chattanooga is #1. Starting to franchise into a chain.

Dead last. Bojangles
Gas station chicken beats the brakes off of Zaxby's tiny arse tenders. Brother's ftw.
Also, Cane's >>>>>> Zaxby's for everything but fries and variety

Popeyes is hands down, unquestionably the GOAT
4 piece, spicy, dark meat, all legs. If it ain't all legs then GTFO.
Cajun Fries are the best fries at any chicken fast food place as well.
But you gotta get 2 sides because they're all so good.
What sides do y'all get? I always have trouble deciding between the mashed potatoes and gravy and the red beans and rice. The Cajun rice awesome too. Good corn on the cob.
The onion rings and macaroni and cheese aren't the best around for fast food, but it's still hard to turn down. Actually never ordered the jambalaya side, but it looks good
And of course.... The pièce de résistance... The best part of the whole thing... Popeyes has the absolute GOAT fast food biscuit
Popeyes biscuits are like manna from heaven. Sent to Earth from God and delivered with Jesus himself.

Brother's Chicken > Popeyes
Though I like Popeye's red beans better.

I don't value the opinion of anyone ranking fried chicken that has a damn chicken finger place on their list. Sure, if you're 7 years old, but we're supposed to be adults here. Southern fried chicken has bones and skin.
This.
Best chain is Popeye's.
Most everybody on here can probably name multiple places that beat Popeye's that most of the rest of us have never heard of, all of which are correct answers to the question asked.

Oh my sweet summer child.
And we have a local (Louisville and Lexington) chain here called Indi's that'll beat any other of that regional chain bullshite. Give me a box of keels and some spicy potato wedges. The only downfall is you may have to risk getting shot at given where some of them are in the city. Totally worth it.

Bojangles for breakfast.
Chick-Fil-A for lunch.
Zaxby's for dinner.

Turn in your southern membership card as your mama clearly went wrong with you. Bless your heart and may god have mercy on your immortal soul.
This is what southern chicken should look like and if you do not have a local mom and pop serving this, you need to move.
Canes not only has crappy chicken but they have no cornbread, beans, okra, or other things that go with good chicken. I know some folks may not like greens but they probably never had them cooked correctly.

Don't get me wrong, I'd rather eat greens and black eyed peas over french fries any day of the week, but as far as chains go I'm sticking with Cane's.
Now if we're talking local Soul Food mom and pop places, come to The Square at Oxford and treat yourself to some Ajax
Amazing collards. Hell, Ajax even made me enjoy their coleslaw... and i can't stand slaw.

The best chicken restaurants are the independent ones found in most every southern town, usually in a concrete block building with a name like Chic-King, Chic Delight, Mr. Chick, etc etc. Chicken, livers, or gizzards served in a white carry out snack box and with an unheated dinner roll or piece of white bread. Forget the chain establishments.
