It takes longer as they get further and have to figure out how to coordinate all the threads and undercurrents as well as start maneuvering the story lines to their completions without contradicting shite that happened earlier in the series.

Me too. I really don't know what happened to him. GoT was published in mid 1996, CoK in mid 1998, and SoS in mid 2000. Then FfF in late 2005, and DwD in mid 2011. So he published 3 in 4 years, and then 2 in the next 11.

Now I'm worried that I'll be permabanned if I do it. I'll say this - if what I was told is true, the ending is more shocking than anything else that has happened in the books.
It's hard to imagine a more incredible ending! And if what I was told is false, then I don't see how GRRM could end it better.
