Good thread, I don't have the patience or time to wade through the other one.

How many times have all of you in this thread read the series? if you have read it.
I have gone through it once, and I may have read the first book or two twice I can't really remember because it has been so long. The last book I did a quick read and sort of skimmed the parts I thought were boring.

4 or 5 times. WhatI don't do is go to the ASOI&F wifi or theory sites. Not because I oppose them but b/c I don't have the time. Work and family have taken priority.

I was trying to come up with questions to keep the thread going. It is going to be tough to keep it up constantly

I've read through the whole set twice now and will probably do a third time now that HBO is in the off season. Picked up on a lot more detail the 2nd time through.

You ever read any other series like this?

Not that focuses on politics the way this one does. I've read all the Tolkien of course, but he was much more interested in creating the language and the legend, if you will.

If you like politics, Wheel of Time has got them coming out the arse. A lot of people rag on it, but I love it.
If you like Stephen King, Dark Tower series is phenomenal. He brings in characters from so many other books and you get a little backstory on so much it is great.
Malazan Book of the Fallen is a great dark, violent series with a lot of military type shite that has gotten near universal acclaim.
Just some suggestions if you need something to hold you over until next book comes out.

Read the series twice, but may go through it again over the summer as the other poster suggested.
I have read through the Hobbit and LOTR multiple times. I have also been through the Harry Potter series multiple times.

I'm in my first full re-read with a someone who is reading for the first time (so we're going at a slower pace then I'm used to). I've re-read several chapters independently though since my first read through (i.e. Ned's dream chapter several times).
ETA: I've also read Harry Potter, LOTR and the Hobbit, some of the Dark Tower series, the Chronicles of Narnia, etc.

Lets keep harry potter out of this. I read those books a shitload but I have some serious problems with she who must not be named. (I'm pretty proud of that line right there).
Which Dark Tower did your read and what did you think? Have you read a lot of stephen kings shite before.

Why? They're considered fantasy even if it's not necessarily high fantasy. And I honestly don't have a big problem with books that encourage kids to read (feel the same way about the Hunger Games series as well).

I've read a lot of Stephen King but I wasn't real crazy about the Dark Tower series when I did. I read The Gunslinger. I may revisit it at some point though because I do like King in general. Especially his novellas and collections of short stories (Different Seasons and Everything's Eventual are a couple all-time favs for me).

I just feel like she used a cop out, and the same excuse ending for every one of her books. (Dark lord couldn't kill him because of love or something). I have other reasons that are more related to how she has been received if you want to discuss it but I will leave it there for now.
I loved Dark Tower, I see all the problems people have with it and I wont discuss details because you haven't read it but how he brings in shite from other books and all just really made me enjoy the series. I also think he said he considered the writing a first draft. I know he has edited gunslinger again and re released it.

Perhaps, but bear in mind that these books were not primarily written for adults. I thought what she wrote was not only perfectly appropriate for her target audience, but (most importantly for me) was internally consistent and hung together logically given the parameters she set for that world...

Yes that was just my personal reason for not enjoying the last few as much as the previous ones.
The bigger issue is with how criticism (however valid) is met with such of a harsh reaction from both readers and non readers alike. The non readers are for the most part parents of kids saying "it got my children to read".
The books told a good story, but were nothing extraordinary. The wizard school idea was something that got kids to read well, but used same old characters and archetypes. No stron female characters, in fact, the girls in the story are often shown to be weak and sort of a nuisance who get left behind when the important work needs to be done. Sure hermione is smart, but who gets left behind in the first in the maze or whatever it was in book 1, Ginny falls for the tricks I the diary and must be saved in book 2....
Anyway the point is that the series is one of the best selling fantasy series of all time, but the actual literary analysis of the work does not show it to be anything above and beyond other writings for similar age groups. There are actual critics who think the same way, but because of what I talked about earlier people either don't say it or are met with a major force of resistance from people who will not hear a singe bad word against the series.
I will look for the article I mentioned that discusses this
