It's so dumb that they aren't stretching him out at all.

BMac made a good point on twitter how this is all non-sensical that he is being capped at 3 innings each outing this year when he was throwing 100+ pitches every week a year ago.

Not saying he should throw 100 in a AAA game, but at least let him get up to 75 to start stretching him out so he can be called up to start in Pittsburgh.

36 MLB pitchers are on the DL. There’s no such thing as stretching any more

That's obscene. We were so blessed to have him come here.

Please note the following:

1. The AAA/MLB season is more than twice as long as a college baseball season, therefore a starting pitcher will be tasked with making at least 2x the amount of starts than when in college over a season.

2. Said pitcher will also be tasked with pitching on four to five days rest in AAA/MLB as opposed to at least six if not seven days rest in college baseball.

3. Starting a pitcher off slowly while building stamina in order to make twice as many starts on less rest in between starts requires a process of limiting pitch count early in the build-up process.

The Pirates are accelerating Skenes advancement to the majors, but are taking a measured approach to getting him ready for the grind. There will be an increase in pitch count/innings pitched as the season progresses. The first step is the acclimation to pitching on less rest between starts.

Nothing stupid in the Pirates approach, it is the correct way.

Not uncommon to see 100 MPH pitches in todays game, but there is just something different in Skenes delivery, motion, movement of ball, etc. etc.

Good for you young man. Keep it up!

How often is he pitching? Maybe they want to build up his frequency before length

They’re gonna call him up soon but it’ll probably be another 2-3 weeks if they’re not gonna use him in the pen. They’ve said they’re taking it reeeeeaaally slow with him.

Give it time. We had this conversation last year as well when they were like 20-5 to start

I admittedly don’t know a whole lot about the transition required for a pitcher from AAA to the Majors, but with the 3 inning count they have him on is there any chance they are just going to call him up to be a late reliever/closer this year??

And then let him work himself into the full time starting rotation next year?

I think the only way that would happen is if it’s late in the year, hes still in AAA & they’re in a pennant chase (neither are likely). They’re thinking about the next 6-7 years, not the right now. He won’t get stretched out working out if the pen. Keep watching his starts and see if they start letting him go a little further each time. If you see him going 5-6innings…he comin
