Why do some people create alters?

Is this phenomenon unique to the Rant? On other boards I've seen a few people start new user names after getting banned but alters seem rampant here.

Some do it to get around being banned.
Some do it after being irl'd on their original account.
Many do it to troll people under a fake persona.
Others make alters so they can comment on topics and take stances that they wouldn't want their normal account associated with.
