After next season, Muss will be primed for poaching, as his buyout goes down to $2 million

I mean a school is basically committing 6M+ if they want him at that point with his new contract and the buyout. That isn't something easily done and not including what we would be able to match.

Might as well get used to that. HY isn’t a fan of big buyouts

The more he wins, the tougher the ability of schools can lure him away.

USD not SDSU.

Even better and less of a conflicting opinion for me.

Yeah this isn't football, there are 4 total coaches in CBB making $4M including Muss now. Cal, Beard, Barnes, Muss. That plus paying buyout and whatever else to old coach makes it hard for about any school. You'd have to offer 5M a year, I don't think a 4 gets him to leave here unless maybe 4.9.

At this point I'm only concerned about the NBA calling if he continues having success. Not terribly worried about other colleges.

Not worried about the San Diego clause? I feel like that’s inviting them to offer him the job down the line

USD’s head coach makes $333k per year. Unless Elon Musk becomes a big Toreros fan, I don’t think they can afford Musselman’s contract.

Muss basically got a 1-2 year deal and will have huge negotiation leverage if/when a big money progran comes head hunting during a coaching search.
I’m hoping it was just a leverage play for another renegotiated contract in 1-2 years if he continues to be successful. This was never going to be a market-setting contract offseason due to the loss of revenue related to Covid. And while Muss has proven to be valuable, there is another level he can reach. If he keeps it up and the sport returns to normalcy, he’ll hold all the cards in a couple years.
