Why would Kiffin leave Ole Miss for Auburn. That's like leaving the McDonalds drive-thru for Burger King.
Auburn is a detter job. More resources, bigger fanbase, better history and a more fertile recruiting base.
Kiffen probably has much more freedom at OM than he would have at Auburn though

I think it's honestly negligible, particularly for a good recruiter (which Kiffin is). And that last part you mention cannot be overlooked. It's a biggie.

Why did Venables turn them down?
Clemson probably pays him as much as the Barn would and he wouldn't have to put up with their boosters.

Steele would have been better. Not really based on coaching but he would have fit Auburn better imho.

I know he has kids in school there, or had, don't know their status.
Venables might be the kind of guy that likes to coach defense and does not want any part of a head coaching gig. He is very well paid where he is and it seems that he and Dabo have it going on right now.

Meh hire. Freeze or Napier would have been scarier.
I also thought Freeze or Napier were the only two candidates who would have been in the arse to deal with from day 1.

His willingness to adapt his offense will be a point of interest as well. Boise under him and Petersen has long run an offense like ours used to be. Lots of pro looks. Under center. Unless he recruits as well as we have that won’t lead to great success.
When they won at FSU last year, they did it with 621 total yards and 407 passing yards.
Boise's passing YPG averages under Harsin:
280
309
298
263
292
262
242
Their passing attempts per game have ranged from 31 to 40.

I think it's a pretty good hire considering how silly everything seemed to be getting over there, but his upside is going to be limited unless he can miraculously start out-recruiting the likes of Kirby, Saban, Dabo, et al.
I really wish they went the Kevin Steele route. That would have been a good time.

Three and done........Malzahn left the cupboards bare.

“By the way, if you want to know what really sealed the deal for Harsin, it’s in the very next sentence.
He had a minimal $250,000 buyout to leave Boise State, making him much more financially palatable than coaches like Oregon’s Mario Cristobal, who come with big buyouts on top of the $21.4 million Auburn must pay Malzahn.” - LINK /

The coach could be a breath of fresh air and a new approach or it could go horribly wrong. If it's in between the new coach will only last a couple of yeats.

Wonder why Freeze or Kiffen didn't get the call?
$250k buyout of Boise State coach.
