The flu only kills an average of 50,000 U.S. citizens each year. Coronavirus I guess will become the black plague of Biblical proportions despite only 18 approx deaths. The U.S. is not rural China or Asia and extremely unlikely death rate will come anywhere close to rates there. Nevermind it's already past peaked in China. Nevermind 80% of infected have only mild symptoms. It might be more deadly than flu per capita, but then rabies is 100% fatal but I don't lose sleep worrying that my dog who licked me on the face had just tussled with a rabid racoon.

This virus is at least ten times deadlier than the common flu.

This is all about limiting the number of individuals that come to the hospital at the same time. Let me explain it in a way you might understand..

Bama had 700,000 people attend football games in tuscaloosa. Now imagine they all showed up at the same weekend. Same goes for this, we must postpone and level out the peaks to ensure we save as many lives as possible.

The Flu is a known quantity and is not a spike of millions of people at once.

There have been 30 deaths in Washington alone. Stop getting your news from tRant.

Maybe so, but odds still favor you much more likely to contract and die from the flu, simple math, 18,000 deaths flu vs 18 corona. You're a hell of alot more likely to die from vehicle accident; avg. 100 die each day, every day, in the U.S. Do you worry all day in full angst mode worrying about dying on your next drive?

Okay it's 41 now, was using a couple days ago report. But that's still statistically insignificant. Mass hysteria has roped in another lemming, congrats.

Look at the graph to the right labeled "Closed Cases". There is a 7% mortality rate on the closed cases to date. The flu is less than a 1% death rate.

ETA There is a reason leagues are cancelling/postponing their seasons. There is a reason Disney/Universal is shutting down. There is a reason Broadway has gone dark. You don't see any of those things happening during flu season.

Hysteria hasn't roped you has it? You've voluntarily made the choice to start a thread on a message board about the virus, you're no lemming though.

Is it really 10X deadlier than the common Flu?

Before you snap back with claims that I'm an idiot, please follow my logic or lack of logic if you feel that way

The Common Flu is widely tested for and we have very accurate info on the Common Flu, but with Covid-19 the only people that have been tested so far are the worst of the worst and the most at-risk groups

Is it possible that if Covid-19 was as widely tested and analyzed as the Common Flu then the mortality rates would be a lot more even or equalized between those 2 viruses?

The paranoia surrounding this Covid-19 is akin to analyzing shooting incidents only on the Southside of Chicago rather than Nationwide throughout the entire the USA

Is my logic unfair, too simplistic?

I believe that if we had more wide scale testing, the amount of chaos, paranoia, and interruption of our normal lives would be a lot less than it is now

People really need to stop citing death rates as the only thing as if you don’t die from it you are 100% fine.

A lengthy battle with an unknown disease that could cause long term health issues is not ideal either even if you survive. There are reports from China that it can scar the lungs and cause a 30% reduction in lung capacity.

There’s even rumors out there that the disease has RNA in it and can lead to male infertility. Now that’s more “out there” stuff but the point is we really hardly know anything about this virus.
