Bama loses to Auburn (possible)
A&M then beats Georgia (unlikely 30 percent chance)

Does the SEC champion not go to the playoff?
Or does the Aggies get in with 2 losses since they have beaten the number 1 team twice along with 2 top 15 wins?

I think Georgia will win or Bama will beat Auburn. But can you imagine the world that will blow up if that doesn’t happen?

Because if A&M actually did win the SEC, you would have to say they are among the best in the country. But I don’t see how a two loss champion can get in.

We need an expanded playoff.

A&Mm would go, you're overcomplicating things. Auburn was a 100% stone cold shoe-in lock to go in 2017 as a 2-loss SEC champ had they beat us. And as bad as this year is overall in cfb it would be a no brainer for am to go with wins over bama and uga

I think A&M has a chance of getting in under your scenario. Would probably need a little help.

I realize this is a “what if” post but this scenario is a bit too out there for me to consider at the moment. You’re exactly right that a lot of crazy would have to happen for it to play out in this manner.

I totally understand. It’s really an argument for why we need an expanded playoff.

Agree. More college football is never a bad thing.

Why? To reward a down P5 conference? Because gifting a 2 loss conference champion a chance to be the national champions ahead of more worthy teams is a joke. There needs to be an empirical standard for the playoffs instead of an emotional one.

1. Unbeaten, untied P5 conference winners
2. 1 loss/tie P5 conference winners
3. Unbeaten untied G5 conference winners
4. Unbeaten untied independents
5. 2 loss/tied P5 conference winners

Start at the top and stop when you have 4 teams. You will rarely get past 3 on that scale. Either the regular season matters or the plays are a joke and we just go back to the old system.

If they follow precedent then UGA would go. Ohio State was picked a few years ago over a Penn State team that won the B1G but had two losses to the Buckeyes' one.

Why because sometimes the best team in the nation is hard to see.

And no one wants to see an independent lose by 50 points because “they had an undefeated season”.

They should and I would love to see it only second to the Tigers ending that scenario with a win over the Aggies. Either should stop the “LSU is hiring Jimbo” nonsense.

A&M beating Georgia would be a crazy scenario.

If Oregon and Oklahoma win out they would have to probably choose between them and Georgia. Twice in the past they took a 1 loss team in that scenario but you didn't have a head to head win in the conference championship game. Everyone thought Auburn would have been put in with 2 losses in 2017 if they won. It will be a really close call.

Too early - plenty of football to be played.

A&M has to win out AND get help.

So the regular season doesn’t matter and we should return to the preBCS model? A completely subjective system with no standards? We can just package it was a playoff and keep expanding it til we get to 16? 32? Teams to feel like the best teams get a shot?

What a joke. Championships are inherently exclusive not inclusive. Nobody wants to see a G5 bet blown out? Cool boot them from consideration altogether. Have the P5 become the P4 and form a true D1 football setup. The fact should remain that anytime you go past the first 2 criteria you are just filling spots in a 4 team playoff anyway. If you don’t win your conference you shouldn’t be in the playoffs.

But how about:
1. Unbeaten, untied P5 conference winners
2. 1 loss/tie P5 conference winners
3. 1 loss/tied division winners that didn’t win the conference.
4. Unbeaten untied independents
5. 2 loss/tied P5 conference winners

Does that make you more receptive to this? Surely we can pull 4 worthy teams via this system every year?(and we know at least 1 team will get blown out but 4 teams minimizes this a bit)

1. TAMU beats OM and LSU (not that crazy).

4. All THREE of those happening are a bit of a long shot, but, individually, we're still in this.

The committee is never going to overlook the SEC champion… even if that champion has two losses.

No personal offense, but this topic is so tiresome.

With four teams, someone will always argue that there should be eight. With eight, someone will always always argue that should be 16. With 16 someone will always argue there should be 32.

And there is never going to be ian “All-NCAA” tournament.
