55%
That's the percent of opponent's drives that have ended in a 3-n-out. No SEC team has a better rate since at least 2010 (as far back as our Warrior dataset goes!)

0.5 POINTS PER DRIVE
Another stat no other SEC defense matches dating back to 2010. 0.6 points per drive against ranked opponents. (keep in mind, this includes garbage time)

-17.3 DEF. EPA PER GAME
This is actually the best we’ve seen by a college defense over the last 10 years

Have you adjusted for the offenses they’ve played?

2016 Alabama is the one that always sticks out to me as the best in today’s era… until they got blasted by Clemson in the natty.

Upon second look, that defense had 30+ put up on it three times. That’s not going to happen to this Georgia defense.

Let's hold off until they play a decent QB. Impressive that Georgia will go through a 12 game schedule without playing a decent QB.

Georgia won't know what hit them when they play Young or Corral.

The 2011 Alabama D's the one that UGA's D most closely resembles.

Bama has had some great defenses, but I can’t recall when I’ve seen a more suffocating defense than what Georgia is putting out there this year. There have been some dominating defenses in the SEC but a lot of them came before the touch-football defense teams play now. A lot of defenses were stellar back in the 80’s and 90’s when teams were able to tear your head off on defense. UGA is playing that kind of suffocating defense in an era when it’s hard to do that. It’s impressive. I hate the Mutts but you gotta give the devil due.

So far yes, I haven’t seen one in the wide open offensive era like this one.

2011 LSU and 2011 Alabama.

We know how good the LSU defense was that year. Held #3 Oregon to 27. Oregon scored more than 40 9 times that year. Next lowest output was 34 in a win against Washington. 14 of the points LSU gave up to Oregon were trash. Held West Va to 21 and Alabama to 21 in the NCG. WVU scored 70 plus against Clemson that year in its bowl game. No one else scored more than 17 on LSU (Petrino coached Arkansas). After that, 11 points was the next highest by a ranked Florida team.

Alabama gave up 21 to Georgia Southern , 14 to Auburn and 14 to Arkansas. They didn’t play any offenses near the fire power or Oregon and WVU that year.

Those are the two best defenses in the SEC in the last 30 years.

You can't compare a half season of stats to previous whole season of stats. let's get through the season vs Florida, Tennessee, Mizzou (lol), Georgia Tech (eh) and the SECCG before we start mashing numbers together.

Kirby Smart is a defensive guru. I think we all know that. He and Saban were a match made in Heaven while they were at Alabama together. Georgia's performance this year has been stellar to say the least and anyone who is doubting their defensive prowess due to who they have played needs to get their head checked. This is the best defense - statistically speaking - college football has seen in the last 10 years.

It will be interesting to see how they perform against a more prolific offense but my money says they will cause any opposing offense fits.

Their front 7 is as good as I've seen. They can be had in the secondary though if they play an offense that can exploit that.

Auburn moved the ball fairly well, compared to what I was expecting, and would have scored at least 3 touchdowns if not for multiple dropped passes.

The good news for UGA is Bama is the only team that can even hope to challenge them on both sides of the ball and they even seem a little down this year compared to usual.

I could see Bama beating them once, hard to see them doing it twice unless they have significant improvement on the OL.

It's an incredible defense. The only part of that defense that hasn't been tested by a real threat is the back end. I'd love to see them against a great passing team, but I'm not sure there are many of those. Ohio State probably, Oklahoma with Williams maybe.

Alabama has a chance to be interesting if some guys develop, but we'd struggle to break 25 I think. We wouldn't be able to run and we'd have a lot of drives blown up by sacks.

Nah the older defense were better. In today’s schemes of power running and ball control it’s easier to have better defensive numbers.

They're really good but no, not yet.

Teams with Best Defensive FEI from 2007-Present

1. 2016 Alabama 1.88
2. 2011 Alabama 1.82
3. 2011 LSU 1.77
4. 2021 Georgia 1.69
5. 2009 Alabama 1.64
6. 2012 Alabama 1.63
7. 2017 Alabama 1.61
8. 2014 Ole Miss 1.60
9. 2015 Alabama 1.57
10. 2017 Auburn 1.54

Georgia has been very dominant defensively but their competition hasn't been great. Auburn's the only team they've faced that ranks in the top 45 in scoring offense. And Auburn's scoring offense is inflated by them scoring 122 points against Akron and Alabama State. In their three games against Arkansas, LSU, and Penn State, Auburn has averaged 27.3 PPG which is okay but nothing special.

The 2011 Bama defense allowed 5 first downs in the national championship game.
