Takeaways
- Bryce isn't making turnover worthy throws
- Not much explosiveness
- Receivers are both dropping big gainers and not making tough catches -> hurting yardage on both ends

Here is a link I posted in another thread that shows every snap for Bryce against UF.

Deep balls(20 yds) usually are not on target. Many are thrown behind or WR has to slow down like the opening play to JW if in stride was a TD.

Metchie had several he could not reel but he was double teamed any time he went down field. They planned that well to eliminate him as a threat.

Yep - one of the reasons why his accuracy rate is pretty good but his depth adjusted accuracy rate is in the bottom half of the league.

He has the arm but just needs time. Under 20 he is usually on the mark.

I am not sure anyone could have done any better down field, QB or WR, with how Metchie was being covered.

Agreed, its not a lack of arm talent on deep balls. Most of them he just needs to pull the trigger sooner. He'll get better at seeing them developing faster and getting it out faster.

One thing I like about Bryce, which probably contributes to some of the stats like uncatchable rate, is he is very good at putting the ball where if his guy can't get it, nobody can.

Yea, they just don't all seem fully in sync yet. Which makes sense.

It certainly isn't a talent issue and he's not wildly off. They'll figure it out.

I see a lot of Ole Miss points in Tuscaloosa in those charts.

Definitely. Accuracy isn't the issue at all. He's just holding the ball a half beat too long. It's kinda like what Jalen did his first two years, but not to that extreme. He's a hair off, not 10 yards.

Yep, except I get the feeling that Bryce holds it longer looking for the perfect throw where as Jalen held it longer because he didn't trust what he saw.

He's no Mac Jones but bottom line our WRs are not getting open like they have the past couple of years, which I suppose is to be expected.

Bryce needs to get better but he's a young guy who barely played last year (a mistake by Saban IMO - we had plenty of chances to let him throw more) and is getting his feet wet.

The WR play is not good. If we are looking for our WR to make explosive plays after the catch on short stuff I don't know how Slade Bolden can be in there. Williams looks like our clear best WR and Metchie is pretty 'meh.' I mean he's good but more solid than anything.

As far as the UF game, after watching that video I really think the hits he was taking even early in the game when we had success started to wear on Bryce.

Which is why I fricking hate how much we handcuff our 2nd team offense in blowouts. Bryce should have been getting this in game timing down last season when we were up by 5 TDs going into the 4th quarter. That has always been my one and only serious complaint about Saban. He lets the backup defense have the full playbook but forces the backup offense to essentially knee the game out.

And Hurts in 2018. It was showcasing how much he improved.

It also helped that Jalen was an upperclassman and team leader. I'm sure a ton of the thought process behind it is both preventing the young guys from having some success and letting it go to their heads or having struggles that kill their confidence, but a kid like Bryce I feel like has the right attitude and makeup to have avoided either of those pitfalls and letting him attempt like 20 passes all season despite playing in nearly every game was a mistake. He's an extremely impressive kid who is mature beyond his years just like Jalen and Tua were.

It's wild how completely under control and in charge of everything he has been in these first 2 games against power 5 teams.

The Miami game was just basically them saying "we're coming into your face all game, can you handle it". And then the Florida game was the type of game that is tough for even the most seasoned QBs to handle, and he was fantastic in terms of poise and staying under control. Remember Bo Nix's first big game at Florida? Remember Burrow's first big game at Florida? Bryce was none of that.

Jalen, Tua, and Bryce are all variants of Todd Marinovich where Marv's steroids and abuse were replaced with with discipline and patience.
