For all the boomers, is this how you felt when SC/ARK joined?

I’m 33 for reference so I was only 4 when we became SEC.

Edit: I was personally excited when A&M and Mizzou joined but I don’t feel nearly the same this go around.

There can't be any comparison. No fear overcame any SEC team when SC and Arkansas joined.

Yes the only difference is that the dozen retarded fans that Arkansas and South Carolina have weren't able to jump on the internet and act like idiots back in the day.

Sorry for using the r word.

I did not want expansion both times because I am a traditionalist. In this instance I just hate Texas.

It's nice to be the forgotten generation(X).

USC was seen as a ?, but arky was seen as a blessing. We badly needed a better rival in shooty hoops.

We liked SC joining. We weren’t sure about Arky but they have become solid SEC brethren.

I remember a post on an old board giving props to South Carolina for being the first state to succeed from the country when they tried to get tyrannical. That took balls. May need that same leadership again soon.

Liked Ark and SC… liked A&M and have gotten used to Mo. But this is a move toward being NFLjr… SEC could be heading toward schedules that are pretty meaningless as far as tradition goes. If they join, who is left OOC to make fun of?

I wasn't particularly happy about SC and Arky being in the SEC when it first happened, but both teams have assimilated rather nicely.
I had mixed feelings about the addition of A&M and Mizzou. I liked the idea of having the Aggies in the conference simply because A&M and LSU had a pretty good history between them. I wasn't happy about Mizzou, however. They just didn't even come close to fitting geographically in a conference named the Southeastern Conference. The culture is also decidedly more midwestern than southern.
Then there was the issue of having 14 teams in the conference. I liked it best with ten teams. Twelve was acceptable and allowed for an SECCG to be played to determine the conference football champion. But fourteen teams feels like it's a bit too much.
I'm completely against adding two more teams to the conference no matter WHO they may be. Clemson and Florida State are two historically good teams that would fit in well geographically and culturally, but I don't even want them in the SEC. It's like we've just opened the border and started shipping in illegal immigrants from third world conferences.

(Okay... I'll admit that the last statement above was a tad bit harsh.)

We were happy to get to a conference championship 12 teams. No one tried to scream and stomp like aggy is STILL doing.

Not at all. Both schools are a good cultural fit. A&M and Mizzou less so. Texas and Oklahoma not at all.

Not a boomer but I was in college when it happened and I thought it was pretty cool because it made a possibility for a conference championship game and at the time teams could “share” the SEC championship which I thought was kinda ghey. There was a three-way split in 1989 as an example.

Not really but USC was the head scratcher like Mizzou was. Many were upset that Florida St and Miami "chickened" out. USC was the Hmmm, Ok. Even though USC was a permanent opponent for State initially, it was an oh hum game because we won a lot of those.

Arkansas was good at basketball and football at the time. So when they came aboard it wasn't a surprise. I still get more excited playing some of the traditional SEC schools unless something is on the line against Arkansas.

***There wasn't online message boards to develop an instant rivalry feel like now. A&M and Mizzou seems to be quicker to adapt then Ark or USC. But this is just my opinion. I don't mind Mizzou being in the SEC and actually enjoy aggie being here.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but SC and Ark are in the Southeast.

I remember a lot of resentment, due to many not wanting to expand, with more of it coming from the East (particularly Georgia). The SEC wasn't nearly as dominant back then, so there was less smack talk. The old timers simply didn't want to change anything.

Really didn't give a shite. It was a nice idea and it got us to the magic number to have a championship game and divisions. Everybody felt like Carolina and Arkansas were good fits in the SEC culture-wise and it was a big FU from Arkansas to Texas. But it didn't really ruffle many feathers. Many were disappointed FSU and Miami wouldn't climb aboard instead.

Those teams were added in order to have the conference championship game. Couldn't have it with only 10 teams.

While some thought it might be a bad thing, the truth is it added a quality game late in the season that was very valuable in the poll era, on in to the BCS era.

Quite a bit different than what is going on now.

No I was glad to welcome Arkansas and South Carolina. Nothing against Texas A&M but expansion should have stopped at 12 teams.
