For dog lovers: My dog refuses to eat NexGard flea and tick tablets

We tried everything we could think of and the vet added nothing to what we were doing. Found a solution today. We fine grated the tablet, let it sit for an hour, placed it in the freezer for an hour (this dissapates odor),then mixed it with warm ground beef and covered it with frozen COOL WHIP. Dog ate it all. Previously, our dog would approach the ground beef laced with the medicine, sniff it and walk away. My wife nagged me until I had enough and came up with the Cool Whip idea. Now enjoying a brief respite from nagging.

Get a different brand. Several other great options.

Yeah, that sounds like a lot of trouble. Glad you got it figured out though. My 6 month old puggle loves his NexGard, thank the Lord.

Topical bro. This isn't 1994.

I use bravecto. Only every 3 months instead of every month. Comes in some dog food flavor. Even if your dog doesn’t like it, at least you’d only have to do it 4 times a year.

Did you try pill pockets? My dog takes a bunch of meds, and will eat pill pockets.

I drop it in and hold snout. Works if you're not a sissy

I used to hold my 90 lb lab's mouth closed until he swallowed on the occasions he wouldn't take a pill. He wouldn't be happy about it, but I also knew he wouldn't bite me.

While holding the mouth closed, blow on their face to induce the involuntary swallowing reaction.

My dog(s) eat so fast, I can throw any pill in their "slow eat" dog food bowls and it gets eaten.

Skip a meal and dose him the next... till he learns better.
He'll smell and know what's going on.

crush the pill and mix it in with potted meat

We put ours in a cheese stick. Gone in one gulp. Try to give it to him straight up and he’s like “that’s a no for me dog”.

My Molly loves the HeartGuard (spelling?) and almost always likes Bravecta (fleas/ticks), too.

N/m that was in poor taste and bad judgement.

Go with Bravecto instead. It’s a chew and only every 3 months.

I was using NexGuard for a while and it worked fine. It was just super expensive. Ended up trying the stuff the have at Sam's. It's called PetAction and it's the liquid that you put on the back of the neck and I've had zero problems with it the last couple of years. Maybe try a smaller package at Walmart or something. But, it works for me. I've got a yellow lab ans a schnauzer-doodle.
