I don’t get why every player is opening up a merchandise deal

I’m not really sure people are quite as interested in buying their stuff as they seem to think.

Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz released this logo:

He plans to start selling t-shirts and whatnot with that logo on. Is it just me or is almost nobody gonna buy this?

Unless you are one of the best 25 players in CFB, I seriously doubt setting up a merchandise line is worth it.

I honestly think the best way for a guy like him to make money under the NIL is to just sign autographs around campus and make commercials for local businesses.

Mertz has a great game against Nebraska or Iowa and he sells 10,000 shirts with that logo on it for $25 a pop. Every P5 quarterback should do something similar.

I bet Guerrilla Games (Killzone/Horizon) loves that logo.

I doubt it. If JT Daniels released something like that, I would never buy it. CFB fans care more about the teams themselves than the players. It might be different if the shirts also had a Wisconsin badger on them, but if it’s just the player’s logo, I don’t think it will be popular.

Every fricking Joe Shmoe is going to have a "brand" now, and yall wonder why people think this NIL thing sucks.
I already hate it because of dumb shite like this logo

It's all me me me me me.
It's 100% going to ruin college sports

Not sure it will be worth the costs of paying someone to make the logo, setting up a website, + production costs. We will see I guess. I just can’t imagine the masses buying a shirt that’s literally just someone’s logo with no team affiliation.

They're just hoping someone buys anything, so they can make a little money. The big name guys will have boosters buy thousands of their items as a way of getting them to campus.

Before the NIL, it was legal for literally anyone in America to sell their likeness for money EXCEPT college athletes. That’s completely unfair and absolutely Unamerican.

I am afraid some guys will be spending a lot of time on things like this rather than focusing on football and studies. I believe you still have to be a student in order to play at the college level.

I can see some real downside to this. Hopefully things will settle down regarding the implementation of this.

....and boosters with control of large corps. will make sure recruits know they'll be representing them when they sign with their school. This nightmare is just beginning.

I have a Knowshown and Stafford shirt from years ago. When it only runs $25, someone will buy it and as long as it doesn’t cost the athlete much to produce (likely just means the production company gets 30% of each sale) then it’d be pretty dumb not to put something out. Like someone mentioned, it’s basically hedging their bet on having a big game and getting a nice little turnaround in apparel sales as a result

They can major in business, advertising, public relations, etc. This will become their major in a lot of cases and that’s actually a good thing.

This NIL thing seems like it is being overthought of by a lot of the athletes and even fans. Yes it will be hugely beneficial to the big name kids and for future stars/recruits, but they had to find a way to allow college athletes to make money. They weren’t even able to get jobs. They had so many strict and ridiculous rules and it was asinine IMO. You gotta think about ALL of the athletes; not just the big names or stars. If you were some kid going to a small school that luckily received a scholarship; you had no way to make side money or if you had a poor family and you were a contributor financially; once you went to school you could no longer help your family… this will change that now. The athletes can get jobs now; or have a side hustle. Seems like everyone is just assuming that every kid is going to start their own brand or company, etc. but I don’t think that is necessarily the case. I guess time will tell.
