I’m good with Kirby. Beats Auburn’s arse on the regular so not much to say. Dude can recruit and he’s a damn good coach. Had some misfortune at big moments but that happens. UGA will always be in contention for the playoffs.

As a playcaller, it was the wrong call (although it is easy to see the design of it with 2012 and with a 5 star QB being asked to make a throw. Swift vs a linebacker in man? Advantage swift... even if bama knew a fake was coming).

You guys got to stop with this 2012 comparison. As if we are talking about the same football program under Mark Richt. 2012 was the best Georgia team we faced in the Nick Saban era. They were an offensive power in that game and the season and their athletes and approach in that game in no way reminded me of 2018, other than the G on the helmet. The element of surprise would be based on the momentum of the game and 2018 wasn't fooling or setting up this BAMA defense.

2017 and 2018 were both better than 2012.

What would be the "honest" consensus of Kirby's skills if he had to actually find his way out of the West every year?

He would be in the same position as all the other coaches in the West? Rotating on to some other job after their fanbase becomes upset they can’t consistently beat Saban.

Excellent recruiter

Good defensive coach

I think his team lacks a measure of respect for him. The transfers, the mental weakness, the lack of extra effort. These issues are endemic to college football, so I'm not singling Kirby out for them but rather he lacks the magic that prevents them.

Do we think anyone leaves Alabama without (1) being 4th on the depth chart or (2) Saban wanting them to leave? Same thing at Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, etc.

Georgia players know they're good and expect to just show up and win, and if they don't, well who gives a shite. Until Kirby fixes that, they will continue to lose at the highest levels.

Kirby will be just fine. If Saban left today, Bama fans would have Kirby in their top three choices for replacement. Winning a championship involves some luck and UGA hasn't had much of that in 40 years. LSU was the greatest team to ever take the field, but somehow when Kirby loses to them, he's a bad game day coach. You guys are funny!

The comparison is for 1 playcall.
Bama had the same special teams coordinator. Smart was 1+ years removed from the team and knew the alignment.
Dont get your panties in a wad.

I highly doubt that.
After Abry Jones was injured, we had 0 depth on the DL. We played our 350 NT at defensive end. And we didnt have a sub for him (he would come off the field in our 2-4-5 nickel).

And our offense wasnt explosive.
We scored 7 on you from a blocked field goal. Our offense scored 3 times the entire game. And we needed a fake punt to do that.

I'll give you 2017 was better than 2018. But you also had more Mark Richt holdovers as well. 2012 was better than both. Aaron Murray threw for close to 4000 yards and some guy named Gurley was close to 1500 on the ground. They were hell on wheels and with talent like Jarvis Jones, Alex Ogletree, Kwame Geathers in the middle of the DL it was a handful. It was easily Mark Richt's best team and Georgia since that time.

But he's on the stage. Only a matter of time, IMO.

So has Saban multiple times.

The funniest thing about these threads, whether they're about Kirby, Mullen, Jimbo, etc., is they always boil down to "the coach sucks because he isn't Saban." What Nick has done at Bama has killed the curve for all other coaches. Just because a coach doesn't come in and immediately win multiple natties doesn't mean they're an average coach.

Imo he’s a coach who has had a successful first 5 years. One of four coaches to have 50+ wins, a playoff win, and a conference title since becoming HC at UGA. However, until he wins a natty I wouldn’t list him as elite.

I'd take Kirby in a heartbeat

The only thing he hasn't done is win it all, and that's because he couldn't get past the best coach in CFB. And he damn near did get past him.

Kwame Geathers in the middle of the DL

Lol

You blew your wad with the other names.
You ruin credibility with this take.

Jon Jenkins was the handful in the middle. After Jones was hurt, Kwame wasnt good enough to move (and we didnt have depth to begin with). We move Jenkins outside and by default make Kwame the starter. We got significantly worse at both positions because of Kwame's limitations. We were not a handful.
Bama ran for 350 and 3 scores. Averaged 7/carry.
Grantham's limitations in scheming to stop the run also played a factor.
