Looking back, what the frick was our medical staff doing with him? The guy eventually got drafted 40th overall and has played for a few different NBA teams. If there was even the hint of an issue that would make it unsafe for him to play none of that is happening. Baylor may have been willing to roll the dice but pro teams aren't going to be as inclined. Especially for a backup PG type prospect. There was obviously nothing there. Makes you wonder if it was engineered so we could make room for Kira. I don't remember the exact timeline of all that though.

Whatever. It’s like asking “what if we got Tebow”

We might not have Saban that’s what

1: Sears/Holloway/Philon
2: Wrightsell/Mallette
3: Youngblood/Reid/Cunningham
4: Nelson/Stevenson/Dioubate
5: Omoruyi/Sherrell

That would be an absurdity, preseason #1 type roster. Take away Nelson or Sears and it's still top 5. Both and it's still probably top 15 (even without considering the replacement options).

I imagine there are 2 thoughts with the Philon thing.

(a) Nate is not going to be caught flat footed again at the guard spot. It was clear that having to play Sears and Estrada 37-40 minutes a night really was not something he wanted to have to do, but he had no alternative.

(b) A clear selling point to Mark to play more off-ball, both on offense and defense, as well as play 32 minutes a night (on average) to have his legs under him and not hit any sort of a fatigue wall late in the year.

Cunningham and Dio seem to be the ones who would struggle to get on the floor, but I think Dio is a guy who will have certain games/matchups/nights where he plays 15 minutes as a energy guy. This feels like a possible roster where 11-12 guys will contribute at points during the year, but there will be games where 2-3 of them just don't get on the floor for various reasons.

And as we very well know - 12 guys can go to 9 guys really quick with injuries.

On Torvik's 2025 projections, if you run with the everybody back + Cliff roster (not including Philon), we are #5 in the country.

#5 Overall - 0.9305
#3 Offense - 119.8
#33 Defense - 95.6

As long as this isn't anyone's attitude:

And it's on the table, their mouths are chokin'
But I'm goin' hungry (goin' hungry)
I'm goin' hungry (goin' hungry)
I'm goin' hungry (goin' hungry)
I'm goin' hungry (goin' hungry)

We should be ok....

Looks like we are now at a place where it's Final 4 or bust as a Bama fan every year for the foreseeable future.

I hope not. The tournament is a fickle arse beast. But I do think it's build a team that compete for the conference title and make a tournament run or bust for sure. There will be better years than other roster wise just because of how the portal is, but we're definitely in a place where we can expect to be very good on a yearly basis.

There's a lot of teams where it's final 4 or bust. Kansas, Duke, UNC, Gonzaga, Kentucky, UConn, etc. It just means that's the expectation every year.

Philon seems like a perfect fit. Were we targeting someone else earlier?

I don't think those fanbases look at a season as a failure if they don't make a Final Four. I think they look at it as making Final Fours more often than not is the expectation, but even great programs don't come close to making the Final Four every year. The tournament just doesn't operate that way.

Final Fours since 2015 (10 years)
Villanova - 3
North Carolina - 3
Michigan State - 2
UConn - 2
Kansas - 2
Duke - 2
Kentucky - 1
UCLA - 1
Syracuse - 1
Michigan - 1

Yeah getting to the Final Four is fricking hard and usually involves at least some amount of luck. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect us to consistently field 20+ win teams competing for the conference championship and a high seeding in the NCAA tournament though. Oats has elevated us to that tier already and there's no signs of it being a flash in the pan. Postseason college basketball is pure chaos and putting pie in the sky expectations on it is just begging for disappointment. You have to enjoy it for the beautiful mess that it is. Coach K went to 13 Final Fours. He also failed to survive the first weekend 10 times. All you can do is put together a team good enough to go on a run and let the chips fall.

Yea for example I think Duke folks are reasonably happy with John Scheyer after 2 years

It’s about being a consistent threat to make the FF. Oats for example was a matter of when, not if.

In my opinion, I'm judging my coach and program on 2 things

(a) Do they consistently have Top 4 seeds (giving them a very good shot at getting to the 2nd weekend more often than not)
(b) Have they shown they can win in the tournament (at least 1-2 runs where they outperform their seed)

There are some teams/coaches who do (a) but cannot do (b). However, if you do (a) and even every once in a while prove (b)........sign me up.

Oats, obviously, has excelled at both. Before this past tournament he was not quite there on B (though not a disaster at all), but he's now firmly elite at both of those.

- 4 seasons with a NCAAT
- 3 Top 4 seeds (#2, #1, #4)
- 3 trips to the 2nd weekend
- 1 Final Four run, outperforming seed

The schedule for next season should be interesting.

Also, these fans that have all of the sudden took interest in Bama basketball need to show up at Coleman this year. Our non conference turnouts for games left a little to be desired. If a F4 with a possibly stacked roster don't fill the hangar early and often, nothing will.
