I’m old, glory days and all that crap, but I have never liked Eli as a play by play guy. I grew up on Jon Forney in his prime, before the stroke took his abilities. Forney painted a picture of each play so that I saw each play unfolding. He always gave pertinent data like down and distance. I never know what is going on with Eli. He is terrible at describing a play as it unfolds. And he rarely gives simple info like down and distance.
Also, Paul Kennedy was great, too.

I had a roommate in college that always talked about how terrible Eli is. I never had a problem then because I would listen to him on one of the gameday radios at the game, so obviously I could actually see what was going on. Once I was out of college and have had to rely on him for a handful of games on the radio the last 10 seasons or so I realized he really is terrible at painting a picture at what is going on. It is beyond time to move on. I just hate it that Chris Stewart has had so many medical issues that could keep him from doing it. He would be the perfect guy.
That's literally what they are paid to do though. You pay the radio announcers to be homers. Just like in MLB I expect the announcers on Fox Sports South to be Braves homers and if I were to watch a Yankees game on YES I would expect them to be Yankees homers.
But I do agree with your last two points. UGA's play by play guy is the only guy I know of that has blocked me on twitter, I would assume because I let him know just what I thought of that particular play call. Bramblet/White were unlistenable on Auburn's broadcasts because every play the other team should have been called for a penalty and if heaven forbid Auburn be penalized the refs were clearly out to get Auburn.

I like Eli's voice and he has been around forever. But he is too concerned about talking about the position of the sun in the sky and the smell of autumn in the air... even the crimson pin stripes on the pants to give the essential details.
Down, Distance and position on the field... that is what we need.
We are spoiled now that all the games are on TV, but if you are solely dependent upon the Alabama broadcast if it frustrating to keep up.
I remember a game years ago. Alabama is in a tight game with someone that they should have beaten easily. Bama is punting near midfield and the punt is blocked.
It was 3rd down for the other team before Eli ever told us where the ball was on the field. A blocked punt can go anywhere. But I guess Eli assumed we were watching the game and knew exactly where the ball was downed.
Someone one else mentioned this type call.
1st and 10. Hand off up the middle.. BIG HOLE for Harris... he gets wrapped up.. bringing up 2nd and 9.

I was on the road for much of the UGA game. Honestly, I ended up listening to the GA broadcast on Sirius because it was lightyears better. Eli doesn't really give you down and distance, yards on play, or any other meaningful information. It's really frustrating.

I don’t know if this is true, but i have heard he has been having some trouble with his eyes, then he mentioned something about it on a finebaum interview this week in passing.

You're glossing over the issue I have with Eli ... we often DON'T KNOW it's "second down and eight," or if Najee ran for four yards. Or sometimes if Eli tells us Najee ran for four yards on second and eight, on the next play he'll tell us it's third and seven. This isn't recent; it's been going on for years.
I'm making an assumption (which is completely unwarranted) that you are somehow watching the game while listening to Eli -- either in the stadium, or on TV. In that situation, I think Eli is pretty good; I can see the result of each play, and can just listen to Eli give background info. But sometimes I have to depend on the radio broadcast to follow the action, and it quickly becomes very frustrating.

I'm also making the assumption that Eli believes we are listening to him while we watch the game on our 4K TV. (May not be true, I just hate to think he's really that bad)

I haven't listened to one of his broadcasts in years, probably since the invention of the DVR. If I can't be home and watch it live, would rather risk hearing a score and watch it later than listen to Eli.
I'll never forget calls like this:

I noticed that too.
I think it’s as simple as he’s getting older. Father time comes for us all. He doesn’t have the same energy he used to have
But imo, he used to he fantastic. He has a great radio voice. His call for the Rocky Block back in 2009 was one of the best calls in sports radio history. He’s a legend. He’s just lost his fastball so to speak
